I looked around and I think I missed where it was “tied” between area and point for place type.
Is this going to be a US standard or something each area figures out?

This will be a US standard. It is being discussed now and the new “Places” is active in the Beta Editor, but has not been deployed to the regular editor yet. I believe Gas Stations will be areas, but all areas also have a primary point in the new system. See these forums and stay tuned:
It went live this morning. :o
I see that the consensus on gas stations seems to be converging on areas, which makes sense, because aren’t the boundaries of the area used to define the geofence within which you can update the gas station prices?
Nope, you had to be within ~200m of the ORIGINAL center of the imported landmark (which could have been far away from where the actual gas station was located).
The “geofence” was used to suppress Missing Road MPs.
Is the boundary still being used for traffic suppression, as opposed to parking lot roads for the driveable area?
If not, do we even need the boundaries anymore? I would imagine if the boundaries of a gas station property serve no functional purpose, a gas station makes more sense as a point, no? At least, visually in the client, it would seem more natural to have it presented as a point than a shaded polygon area.
The only issue is I don’t think anyone knows is how points will be displayed in the client. AlanOTB supposed in another thread that it might be based on zoom, but he doesn’t even know.
For now I vote they stay as areas until visibility of points is determined.
I’m not sure gas stations should be shown during a “drive-by” at all, but you guys are right - that’s probably a discussion for that other thread you mentioned.
