Helpful Hint: GIS Mapping Websites

I wanted to provide a helpful hint to other TN wazers out there (if you don’t already know about it).

I primarily use government based GIS mapping to find road names and make map corrections. I have found it so useful in newly developed areas. It has helped so much in rapidly growing areas. I can have entire subdivisions in with street names and the other mapping services just show bulldozers and dirt in their aerials. The great thing about it is that I can usually pull property data to verify the road name if there is a question.

There is a state-wide GIS service at http://www.assessment.state.tn.us/ where you can get pretty good road data for non-metropolitan areas. On the bottom of that page, They also provide links to the remaining metropolitan GIS maps (Davidson / Shelby / Knox / Hamilton / Williamson / Rutherford) that are on county websites. Sometimes those website are slow to load, so I only use them heavily when I have a fast connection.

i never knew about those maps. thanks!

Bookmark (or memorize) the GIS system for Knox county - http://www.kgis.org/. It is very helpful. And they just added historical aerials from 1935. Very interesting to see the changes over time.

The chain of links seems to get me here:

http://tnmap.state.tn.us/assessment/map.aspx

I never seen that specific map before, no matter how much looking I did for it.

The map is good for most of the state except for counties that I listed in my original post. The metropolitan counties that I previously listed are NOT listed on the state map. However, SOME counties that are covered by that state map are additionally covered by the county’s individual GIS websites.

I know my county’s (Blount) GIS is a little lacking, to say the least. I’d very much perfer to be under Knoxville’s system, but, oh well.

This should find useful, thanks for sharing!
