How is Tasmania working

Hi all

I wanted an update with Waze in Tasmania. Is it working well?

Is there an “all” I’m about the only one that uses the forums :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve not had an issues I can recall.

Your effectively in charge of TAS

I’ve got a couple of some jobs to do down there but thats about it.

All level 1 locks by the way. The powers that be are pushing for level 4 locks on all major roads

Level 4 is probably a bit harsh for a place like Tassie, but I do see why there needs to be more than level 1 on anything primary and up.

I’m a level 3 editor too now

95% (guess) of NZ is level 1 but yeah I agree at some point this will need to change.

Hi Folks,

Newish user, first post in the forums, based in North Tassie, do a lot of km all over that area for work, ex Trapster mod, and keen to get things humming. To that end, please view anything I say below in the light of the fact that I probably don’t know what I’m talking about. I certainly don’t want to seem unappreciative of the immense amount of work that has already been done here.

I started editing before I should have, really, - didn’t realise there was so much I needed to know before I got dirty, - but please view that as keenness rather than rashness.

As above, TAS is probably a slightly special case, at least currently. When I read above that some routes might be level 4 locked soon, I groaned. I’m constantly running into issues where I’m trying to add primaries that join to a road of higher rank, only to find that I can’t join them up because many highways are locked to L3. I realise that there’s a procedure to get things unlocked, but haven’t got to that yet. In my scrollings, I have found various places where I imagine other initially keen would-be editors have paved and named a minor road, but haven’t been able to join it to a locked arterial, and have just left it. I think that this level of security is possibly stifling the good intentions of folks like myself. Having said that, I understand that it’s necessary, - but surely for TAS, level 2 would be enough? By then, having done a thousand edits, they’ve shown their hand, and you would have made contact with them and mentored them a bit through chat, like some of you have with me. If someone makes it to level 2, I would think that you could trust them not to wreck the place, especially given that they’d still be restricted to 2mi around where they’ve been. Again, speaking as a n00b, just my thoughts, but would like to know others’ views here too.

Another frustration is a message when I’m editing a small town, and find that I can’t add the town name to the street, because “You can’t add new towns to this country” (or a message to that effect). My understanding is that if you enter a town name in the street properties, then that town suddenly exists as an encompassing zone around streets that share that town name. Tasmania has many towns that aren’t shown on the WME. It strikes me as premature that someone, it seems, has made the call that all the towns and localities that will ever exist in Australia already do. If it was a limitation of my low rank, I’d get that, but that isn’t indicated.

I think the above is probably representative of the thoughts of many new keen users, but of course really it’s only mine. I have a busy life and a young family, and don’t get a lot of time to sit and edit, - probably a couple of hours a week, - but I’m keen, and want to make it count.

Cheers
Shagzter

yep

That about sums it up.

New Zealand is mostly setup as you describe

Firstly the only roads that should be locked at level 5 are FREEWAYS. Highways are 3 and everything else is 1. https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Road_names/Australia#Road_types_and_Lock_levels

As for the town names I found this thread https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=276&t=117114 which suggests the level for adding new cities is set country by country. So you could ask ps_au (our country manager) what the story is there. There is also a bug kicking around that prevents some city names from being changed. I had that problem around Thredbo and never found out why.

Back to the highway lock levels. https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Road_names/Australia#Minor_Highway shows that editors doing highways should add little tails at each intersection to allow you to add on later. Unfortunately this appears not to have been done so you will have to ask for an unlock. If you are doing a big area then ask for a big section of the highway to be unlocked, you don’t have to ask for each segment at a time. More discussion on this topic occurred here (including info about recent extensive damage that was inadvertently done in Brisbane): https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=89523

Gav…

as someone who drives close to 1000km around Tassie each week I’ve had lots of issues with missing roads turns that are not allowed and so on.
I’ve done quite a bit of editing and I have a level 2 editor and it’s really envying when I can’t do basic fixes.
thanks yogo
