iPhone becomes very warm during WAZE usage 2

Any special reason why you locked the original thread on this subject after only 2 posts, Alan? Is the subject too sensitive perhaps?

Whatever the reasons are for WAZE running hot, it can’t be good for the phone’s functioning, components, or lifetime. An aspect I can imagine that WAZE would want to keep its users ignorant of.

For the reason already written in the thread. There are other existing threads on the same subject with the same explanations we could keep writing over and over again. I’d rather we reference existing information rather that repeat it ad infinitum.

I imagine he locked it because there are already threads discussing it.

Actively using 3G and GPS radios creates heat. Yet to hear of it being a problem.

To you, being a jaded WAZE mod, it’s boring ‘ad infinitum’ data perhaps. To new users it’s new information. And pretty interesting information too, if it adversely affects their phone hardware. If not to say crucial information.
And maybe I’m mistaken, but I was under the impression this board’s target audience is (new) users, and not jaded mods…

That’s what the search is for, man. Instead of posting and waiting for, maybe never getting an answer, a simple search query will get you the answer, and a thread you can post in, within 10 seconds. It’s not difficult.

And Alan referenced the previous posts and suggested how to find them. I don’t see how this is a problem.

If am not taking sides here but I think that in general people feel that they are being censored when a thread is locked. What good does locking a thread do anyway unless it is getting offensive?

Just don’t lock the threads and the user who started the thread won’t get upset. Really does nothing for keeping the forum tidy.

If the topic is not worth a response since it has been covered a bunch of times, just don’t respond.

I don’t really agree, though I’ve stopped locking to avoid any backlash. Conversations get fragmented when they’re over several threads and then when post 6 is opened you then have 5 previous threads to pick through and link to.

Won’t comment on the locking, but as for the warmth of your phone during Waze usage: many resource-intensive apps will do this. I’ve been running Waze for a bit over a year on the same android phone (HTC Evo), and while it DOES get quite warm at times, it has never caused any noticeable problems. May be anecdotal evidence, but it is what it is. I believe that almost all, if not all phones will shut themselves off if they become too hot in order to prevent damage, so I don’t think there is much to worry about.

Thank you. Very helpful.

Personally I think that Alan is a power hungry jaded mod that is quite sensitive about iPhone temperatures. The OP totally struck a nerve, and Alan is trying to hide the ugly, ugly truth.

He is also responsible for the Japan tsunami, Haiti earthquake, and he knows who really killed Kennedy.

Orrrrrr…

he answered the question before locking the post, and also provided a valid point about searching before one fires from the hip and spills their noob all over the forums.

So… will my iphone running hot be ok then? …

It’ll tell you when it’s too hot!

My iP4 does get pretty warm, especially in the sun. When the phone gets too hot, protection circuitry will kick in and put a warning on the screen. I’ve never seen this, so can’t comment on first-hand experience.

Here’s an idea:

Get a large clear cup
Plastic ziplock bag - just large enough to fit the iPhone
Ice

Zip up the phone
Put it in the cup
Pack ice behind it

Should run very cool! (disclaimer - don’t try this, professional stunt driver)

Put the iPhone in the ziplock bag and rubber-band it to an icepack. A nice medical one is pretty cheap. Maybe bag the icepack too to reduce condensation drip in the car or pocket.

putting the iPhone in front of the aircond outlet on the dashboard also helps to cool it down.

My iphone4 shut down once for overheating (waze not running just hot sun in the car) and a friend of mine fried his 3g by leaving it on a table by the pool while it was powered off. When he powered it on, it went poof. So the circuit protects while over warming but not if already too hot. Mine is fine and I now let the car cool down before I lay the iphone on the dashboard.
