L5 - Euston Rd Underpass London

Multiple questions  I haven’t driven over the Euston Underpass for ages as always drive under or walk over so here goes… If you know the answers don’t bother unlocking (unless you really want to) just do the fix.

  1. Does this bit of road still exist? I can’t imagine it would have been removed and a couple of UR’s would seem to indicate it is still there as do GPS tracks. I have added it today but it is not named or connected.

  2. Can you really turn right here? There is a UR that suggests you can’t and I suspect looking at road geometry that is probably correct.

  3. This segment has the wrong name.

  4. And finally (minor issue) should these sections really be PRN?

Edit:

  1. I think this slip road has been removed, see for new layout from TFL

Actually it looks like they have got rid of the slip roads on the north side of Euston Rd and made it a no left turn out of Hampstead Rd onto Euston Rd eastbound to reduce the size of the junction and give more space for pedestrians.

I can’t seem to get any GSV around this junction which doesn’t help, all the images appear to have been taken on a pitch dark night! :o

Thanks, Andy.

As a separate “road”, yes it has been removed. The bridge over the underpass is just one big rectangle of tarmac with the four flows of traffic getting a turn to drive across it. All the separated lanes have been removed. #1 is Hampstead Rd southbound, where the traffic can turn left onto A501(E), right onto A501(W) or left onto the Euston Rd contraflow on the southside of the underpass and along the front of UCLH. I removed the segment you added because it it unnecessary - you get a keep right approaching the lights, then a turn left, so it makes it easier to be in the correct lane (as was given to the reporter of the UR on Hampstead Rd). #2 is Tottenham Court Rd northbound, which can turn left onto A501 (W), right before the bridge onto the Euston Rd contraflow (which, as it’s unnamed, would be described as turning right onto A400 Gower St), or cross the bridge then straight on to Hampstead Rd, or turn right on A501 (E). #3 is Euston Rd eastbound, where you can turn left onto Hampstead Rd, go straight on along Euston Rd, or turn right on the bridge and then left onto the Euston Rd contraflow, or right back onto A501 (W) (surprisingly popular!). #4 is the bus-lane exit from the contraflow where buses can continue westwards along Euston Rd or turn right onto the bridge then on to Hampstead Rd, or right again onto A501(E).

Yes, you can. It’s used all the time by the 14 bus route which terminates at Warren St Station and has a layover area on the contraflow, before starting again southbound on Gower St. It also used by a few vehicles that need Gower St and missed University St (or who turn right too early by mistake, as happened to the UR reporter). I think it’s pretty well signed, so shouldn’t be a problem if the front viewport is used (thanks, Timbones, for that wonderful descriptor!)

Totally agree. I’ve removed it as it doesn’t add anything to the navigation.

Agree - OS hasn’t caught up with the changes yet. I’ve changed the contraflow to Minor Highway, and also changed the top of Tottenham Court Rd, as the PRN should only apply to Euston Rd and Hampstead Rd.

I locked it all at L5 once I’d finished the rebuild, as I think it works but suggestions for further improvement welcomed. I think moving back to separate connectors would be just as, if not more, confusing, because they don’t exist.

I suspect UCLH objected to Streetview users looking into the hospital. If you switch to Streetview on the north side of the bridge, it gives you a view which looks up to date.

Thanks John for the very detailed reply, but I think our posts may have crossed as I was re-editing mine as you were posting your reply.

Maybe I should have said you can’t do a U turn from Euston Road eastbound to westbound. My terminology worked whilst the extra bit of road was there and not sure if you will be able to prevent U turns without the extra bit but would agree with you simpler is better if possible.

Are you sure, lane #1 southbound on Hampstead Road is now buses only and it looks like the left turn has been removed for all traffic. Streetview shows this quite well as does this page from TFL. Also see bottom of page 8 of consultation response document which states traffic heading towards Kings Cross will be signposted via Cardington Street and that there should be little or no impact on traffic in Drummond Street.

Maybe Cardington Street etc should be upgraded to a Primary Street to help ensure we dont route via Drummond Street.

Other thing to note is the three slip roads on/off the A400 have gone, that will tidy the area up a bit and you could probably even get rid of the split around the Hampstead Road traffic island, it looks like GPS traces are all over the place so probably wont make any difference.

Andy.

Andy

Good points, all taken.

It enables a complete simplification of the junction of Hampstead Rd with the A501(E) - Euston Rd, removing the one-directional segments completely. As you note, an extra segment to allow a flow from A501(E) into the contraflow is necessary to allow that turn while not enabling a u-turn. The connector from Tottenham Court Rd onto the contraflow is also unnecessary, so I’ve removed it.

Please have another look at the now-revised road layout and check that it meets all the points you’ve noted.

Many thanks

Cheers John,

Looks much better, now I can back to answering those UR’s…

Thanks, Andy
