Short explanation: These segments need their townland name entered, but currently they are locked to level 5. Looking around, these are the only segments in the area that are locked to this level, and I see no reason why they should remain locked, so I also request that these remain unlocked at L1.
Indication: Temporary area manager for the purpose of assigning speed limits and townland names to segments.

OK - I’ve unlocked all those segments and a couple more in the area, but I realised it’s right on the border with Armagh too, so I didn’t want to unlock too many on the Armagh side of the border. I’m not sure what the locking policy is up north, and in any case, WME would stop me from editing anything more than about 100m on the northern side of the border.
Yeah, there are 4 or 5 border crossings in that short stretch of road which is crazy. But it seems that seriousarsonist has dealt with the roads in Armagh by naming them and setting speed limits, so just the roads in Monaghan that apply to your area needed unlocked.
Locking policy in the north seems a little more strict. A lot of minor highways (A road) are generally locked to L3, whereas in the south there are major highways, the N roads, auto locked to L1. Just while I’m here, I should ask if I should be locking these up?
Yeah, a couple of years ago I tried to start a conversation in the forum about whether or not we needed a locking policy, but that didn’t really happen, so we don’t actually have a locking policy at all.
So far, we’ve tried not to lock at all where practical, but I’ve tended to lock certain segments in a few select circumstances:
on very complicated junctions that have taken a lot of work to get working well
on recently-changed bits of road that don’t match the satellite imagery any more
places where there has been a history of damage being caused to the map (typically by well-meaning editors)
There are a few places where some segments got locked years and years ago (such as the ones you just requested an unlock for) but the lock never got cleared, so they’re now locked without a particularly good reason. Some of these would be because the satellite images used to be really out of date but the images have been updated since the locks were placed.
I think that one day we probably need a locking policy, and we’ve managed without one so far because there are very few editors.
That is good to know, thank you again!
I’ll keep those three points in mind when I’m editing in Ireland, and lock where appropriate. I think in this area it will be mostly the second point.
I’m guessing these were locked when they were first mapped, starting on the Armagh side of the border, and then the segments were split at the border, but the locks stayed in place.
