L6 Red-light camera deletion requested

Please could this L6-locked red light camera be deleted as it’s been replaced by a combined speed/red-light camera, ie a speed camera icon, which I’d like to position in the same place.

Thanks

Red light zapped.

Many thanks

According to the Wiki, combined red light/speed cameras should be marked as red light cameras with the speed set to zero, so drivers will always be warned of them. By replacing it with a speed camera, drivers will get no audible warning of the fact there’s a red light camera unless they’re also over the speed limit.

Of course, it would be nice if Waze handled these cameras better - given that you can set a speed on a red light camera, but if we wait for them…

B****r! I thought it was the other way round. Now I’ll have to find a stray red-light camera and drag it there - or go and plant one myself. Serves me right for not double-checking.

Thanks Iain

Sorry, should have spotted that myself.

But I object on principle to the Waze handling of cameras, which seems to have been carefully designed to cause editors as much work as possible. Why can’t we create them on the map? Why do they disappear if a driver hits the obvious target when trying to get the pop-up off his phone screen?

Consequently I never usually edit them and am not familiar with the nuances like speed & red light combinations. Fortunately there are enough people around, with more patience, than me to keep them up to date.

Not a problem! It’s always good to be reminded of the need to read the wiki regularly just to remind yourself of the standard guidance, and to be gently prompted when you’re mistaken about something

There’s sometimes too much to remember, and my memory cells are dying too fast for comfort

Don’t do anything yet, John. Actually, do one thing - set the camera speed to zero. That will ensure it always gets announced in the app.

Although the Wiki says that combined RLCs should be marked as RLCs with speed zero, we’re just debating whether that’s the best way to go?

If the app says “Red light camera reported ahead”, drivers will expect a RLC and not a speed camera. If they’re then naughty (and there’s a strong argument to say “serves them right”), they’ll get done for speeding through a green light.

I’m wondering if it’s better to mark combined cameras as speed cameras with zero speed? When the app says “speed camera reported ahead”, the driver then expects a speed cam. When they see it’s actually at traffic lights, it’s pretty obvious it’s likely to be monitoring those as well.

Such a shame there’s not a simple “Camera Ahead” audio warning…

That makes a lot of sense. However, as I’d already walked an unapproved RLC to that spot, I’m now going to have to find an unapproved speedcam to replace it again. Double-b****r!!

Actually, wasn’t that difficult - they keep appearing all over the place! Speed set to 0.

You’re going to love me now. I did say “Don’t do anything yet, John. Actually, do one thing…”

My fellow admins are of the opinion that a camera at red lights should be a RLC, not a speed camera. I still think there are advantages to using a speed camera instead, but there are also real disadvantages. If users see a SC in the app at the lights, they are likely to report a RLC - probably more likely than vice-versa. And educating all UK users to use SCs instead of RLCs is problematic.

Probably the best thing is to continue as we always have done, whilst asking Waze to better handle a RLC with a speed setting - then all we need to do is add those speeds. Hopefully, by then, we will also be able to control the lock level of cameras.

I wonder how true that is for dual-mode cameras which include the ladder markings on the road surface and/or where the type of camera used is one (e.g. Monitron) which users are more likely to associate with the speed camera role than with the RLC role.
