Landmarks

Are we landmarking stores, fast food joints, etc in New Mexico?

I have some landmarked stores in Farmington but most are not. The general consensus in the US as per the wiki seems to be no stores, fast food, etc.

According to the USA Guidelines (modeled after Connecticut’s), restaurants and businesses are NOT to be mapped. These are handled by 3rd party providers such as Google, Foursquare, Yelp and YP.

Yeah I was trying to see if we were doing things any different in New Mexico, or if the landmarks I’m seeing were done prior to the guidelines.

Yeah, reread afterwards. After reading the subject line I sometimes form the reply in my mind before reading the entire post.

Didn’t mean to step on your toes in sunny NM!

No toe stepping was done, so don’t worry! I’m just trying to make the New Mexico forum a little more active

Guidance for Landmarks was never set in stone. There was strong disagreement between various self-management editors about what should and should not be landmarked through Area Places or Point Places.

More recent action by Waze itself has shown that they value insertion of places in an extreme, high-priority way of inserting landmarks through the app. Furthermore, we have learned from Waze that there is no near-term intent of showing Point Places on the client. Therefor Area Places are more important. Waze wants content.

It is my presence that Area Places be used for all major landmarks that are locally important. They are quite useful to see on the client map and are very useful to navigate to items where you scroll on the client map display, touch where you want to go and navigate to that point. Without Area Places this is much more difficult.

At the same time, we do not want to clutter up the display with irrelevant Area Places. We do not want to put Area Places on the map when they are smaller than the size that will actually display on the client either.

There is additional guidance for New Mexico in the NM Wiki located here.
