Level 3 - I-695 Ramp to I-83N Towson, MD

On N Charles St at the Beltway, this Ramp should be labeled I-83 N / York PA.

The ramp currently is labeled to I-695 W and I-83 N.

See this recent photo and other pertinent information posted on MD-SHA’s website for this construction project. There is a signal at the intersection of Charles and Bellona with a left-turn lane on NB Charles Street for this exit ramp, and, on SB Charles St on the bridge, there is a left-turn lane for the EB I-695 Ramp. You may need to reconfigure the segments on the Charles Street bridge to accommodate this.

According to this status update, the project should now be completed.

I changed the ramp name for I-83N. The rest looked OK to me. Does anything else specifically need to be changed?

Thanks. I anticipate additional minor changes to that intersection, but it’s not urgent. I’m uncertain how Clarke Ave connects to Bellona, and how drivers on NB Charles St and WB Bellona access the “unnamed street” (which is Bellona) to the north and west of the I-83 ramp that you renamed.

If another editor more local to the area wants to have a go … else I’ll plan a drive-by later in the week. For now, the Exit Ramps are adequately named for client routing.

I have a few comments. I work for Baltimore County GIS and have intimate on-ground familiarity with this interchange. Construction is completed now, by the way. Google Maps just flew some low altitude angle imagery over the area that is great for reference. http://goo.gl/maps/4ZiJY It is from Autumn 2012.

  • First let me address the naming of Charles Street. In Baltimore city, there is North and South Charles Street (N Charles St, S Charles St). In Baltimore County, we have opted to sign the northern continuation of that city right of way as “Charles Street” (Charles St). This is because there is no South Charles Street in the county. All green street name sign blades indicate it as such, with no “N” designation. Therefore, the road north of the county line should be simply “Charles St” in Waze. Waze is for drivers’ reference after all. Here is an example of that signage in the County: http://goo.gl/maps/yqkEU (Note that USPS still may use N Charles Street on county addresses, and some locals may refer to it that way, but officially, at least from a road perspective, it is Charles St.)
  • Clark Ave is oneway east and then north, away from the interchange. It looks like it is level 4 locked here. If you need proof, look at the north end on Google Street View: http://goo.gl/maps/2TQad Make sure that the turns are restricted accordingly
  • The ‘unnamed’ section north of the beltway and west of the new intersection should be called “Bellona Ave.” Even before it stopped being a ramp, it was signed as such right down to the end. This is due to the fact that there are several addresses along it, 1300-1312 Bellona Ave.
  • Charles St continues north beyond the interchange for a few hundred feet to Nightingale Way. I just modified an improper two way pair there on the editor, but cannot fix the turn restrictions due to the fact that the Charles Street portion is locked.
  • In Waze, turning right from Bellona (at the south side of the interchange) to Charles Street is prohibited. This is incorrect, all turns should be allowed there.
  • The last thing I noticed is segment=67222103. This is the ramp from eastbound I-695 to Charles St, the left side (or north) fork. All turns should be allowed here. It is actually signed that drivers wishing to go from I-695 Innerloop eastbound to Kenilworth drive, should turn right here, rather than taking the right ramp. That prevents them from having to weave across several lanes to get to the left turn lane at the nearby light at Kenilworth/Charles.

Hope this helps! Contact me if you have any other Baltimore County road questions.

Note that this interchange was more recently discussed here: http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=199&t=39780

I’ve updated the map to reflect the changes you’ve mentioned. There is one part of Charles St that is level 5 locked, by Mike-1323 I believe, that still needed to have the name corrected. Also, since this area still has an outdated aerial view from Bing, the segments should remain locked. On three separate occasions I had to delete a roundabout that was created by another editor based on the old aerial.

Otherwise, everything else should be good. Let me know if there are still any problems with this area.

Well, I still think that you should be able to go from Bellona Ave to the outer loop of the Beltway. But, I’ll leave that for Kodi75 and the others of you that have better knowledge of the completed interchange.

Yeah, I looked quizzically at a recent UR to alert that the roundabout was no longer there! I know that had been deleted months ago!!

I agree with CBenson, in that

and google image posted by Elliot shows that it is indeed possible. Just that the BGS usually dictates how we label the ramp.

I had Elliot to this forum post since it was more complete & asked him to comment.

I changed the name to the same as the rest of the road there.

Thanks to everyone here for the feedback and making those changes! Looks great.

That ramp to 695 WB / 83 is a strange one indeed. If you take a look at this Google view, http://goo.gl/maps/lAL24 you can see the new alignment. (Speaking of which, can one of you add a that driveway at the end of Bellona, to those businesses? Or just add a little bit and make it unlocked.)

One last incorrect thing: https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=7&lat=39.41344&lon=-76.6302&layers=BFTFFTTTFTTFTTTTFTTTTFT&segments=22224449 Right turns are allowed here.

Thanks!

I understand this now. I posted in the other thread about it.
