UR reported that taxi’s can go straight at the junction of Church St > West St. These 3 segments are currently restricted to buses only but I’ve done some digging and it would appear that the UR is correct and taxis are allowed. I’m sure I’ve even been up here in a taxi myself.
I don’t agree that the document you’ve linked says taxis can use these segments.
As I understand it, it says that taxis may use
Roads marked as “Permitted vehicles”
Bus Lanes
Bus or Tram gates (with exceptions)
Prescribed and Prohibited turns
In this case, none of those apply. There are no signs saying “Permitted vehicles”; the roads are not bus lanes; no gates and no turn prescriptions/prohibitions.
Instead, there are clear road signs and road markings saying Bus & trams only. Even if local taxis “know” they can use it, or at least know they won’t get done for using it, we cannot allow Waze to direct drivers to directly contravene the signs that are in place.
Actually, I’m still not happy about it - but this is for taxis only. I suggest you keep an eye on the area in case we get any complaints. Maybe leave a map comment there with a link to this discussion and some “boiler-plate” text that can be used to respond to any taxis who complain (or any non-taxis who are daft enough to tell Waze they are a taxi).
