Good Day:

The turns onto / off of this private road need to be updated:

Please note:

  • This is my first post to CAN Unlock/Update, and I’m purposefully using this very low priority correction as a practice to ensure I understand the unlock/thanks/lock process. I’m a Level 2, non-Area Manager editor, with intention to apply for AM on Vancouver Island after I have more exposure and fully understand the time required to be an AM.
  • What is expected in Waze with regard to left turns over double-yellow? In BC, they are permitted as long as non-obstructing. For further info, see UR (made by me) at the noted intersection.

Thanks – very well written and assembled request!

I’d be inclined to grant it, except that I’m not certain that turn really is allowed. I understood that a double-solid line in BC was not to be crossed (and was akin to having a curb there, with lower expense).

Can you verify this in the MVA?

Definitely can do.

Link below. 155(1)a is the key paragraph setting the rule, and 156 suspends for vehicles enter/leaving a highway when it can be done safely and when not “unreasonably affecting the travel of another vehicle”.

I should also add that this particular item is open to interpretation in a sense… that road is well travelled, but there are very frequent breaks on traffic, such that the “not unreasonably affecting” clause would be in affect 99% of the time.

As I’m using this for practice and learning, this thread is as much about what is typically expected from Waze editors in general as it is about this particular situation.

I’d say it applies in this case (as it’s a driveway), but one might question whether a vehicle is “entering” a highway when at a cross street.

I’ve unlocked it, please let me know when the change is made so it can be relocked.

Hi GeekGuy61,

Those changes look good, and I think it’s the right decision to not allow the left turn into and out of the complex and crossing the double yellow. I’m not on the island that often, but when working on some other areas around Saanitch I noticed a misalignment between the mapped roads and the satellite image. Would you be able to verify road locations are actually correct?

I’ve noticed misalignments between photos and road overlay before. Not sure what you mean about verifying the roads loations are correct… i.e. how would that best be accomplished (other than toggling GPS points)?

I was thinking of actually being out there on severely misaligned roads and verify actual intersection locations vs map position. The GPS points are often not really accurate enough and there are not enough of them to have any at all on the smaller streets. It’s not super urgent, but just check a few locations when you can. Looking at where the GPS points are, some appear to be mapped correctly, yet others are off a bit.

Hopefully there will be a new satellite image update soon as this area is low definition and looks quite old…

Interesting idea. I do have a hiking GPS that takes over a minute to calibrate on power up. I’ve found that usually only floats a couple of meters from actual. I could use that to pull accurate lat/long coordinates of a map point. But then, what’s the process by which that info would be used to calibrate image alignment in Waze?

Well, if it’s a case of the background being incorrect, we can submit a misalignment fix request to Staff.

If, however, it’s a case of the roads being incorrect, we simply move the roads to the correct location.

In my limited experience so far (on Southern Vancouver Island), the GPS points and roads align fairly well. But the image base is often misaligned by a few to several meters.

I would check GPS coordinates for a reference intersection and verify that against where the map is and where the satellite image shows the intersection. If the map is correct, then no problem, but if the satellite image shows correct locations, then there is some realignment required. Great way for you to get some more editing points correcting alignment.
