Reason for request: Hiya, I happened to be planning a route for tomorrow in a van when the person I am visiting made me aware of a weight restriction meaning I will have to take a different route. Basically the narrow canal bridge here at Winkwell, next to the Three Horseshoes Pub is limited to 3 tonnes and under (visible on SV). Currently this section has no restrictions but desperately needs restrictions banning Vans, HGVs etc. 3 Tonnes is under the average laden van weight and the bridge is also narrow. This is out of my editing area though so if someone could apply the restriction to the bridge section ( a new segment just for the bridge may have to be made) That would be marvellous. My friend says satnavs are always routing traffic through there and the locals have a book on how many vans will be struggling to make u-turns.
Although WME gives us the ability to restrict segment access by a fairly broad range of vehicle types, Waze will only concern itself with generating routes which are open either to cars or to taxis depending on whether you’ve got that option set in your app - there’s no way to make use of these other vehicle type restrictions at present…
Also bear in mind that we have no ability to set measurement-based (weight, width etc.) restrictions, and there’s been enough discussion in the past over whether or not vehicle types could be used as a proxy for such restrictions (short answer, no) for us to now steer well clear of this topic.
So given that Waze HQ are firmly of the mindset that Waze is designed for and intended to be used by commuter and taxi drivers only, the map data needs to accurately reflect the road network available to such drivers. If this means we have to leave a section of road mapped out as apparently available to any vehicle, when in reality anything bigger than a large-ish car would struggle to get through, then so be it. Personally I’d be only to happy if Waze gave us the tools we’d need to accurately map out every type of restriction there is, but until that happy day when they do this, we do what we can with what we’ve got, which right now isn’t much…
