Level4 → L1 - A224 Badgers Mount to Dunton Green

Hi,

My level: 1

Could somebody unlock the A224 between here and here

and the unnamed road between here and here please?

Reason: All of the speed limits are incorrect.

In a related question, I’ve been using Waze for several years but have only recently started trying to help out editing the maps. It is frustrating that nearly every change that I make requires a request to unlock it before editing can begin. I understand the reason behind this restriction, but is there any way around it to save keep coming on here and pestering more experienced users for an unlock?

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Dave

Hi Dave. All unlocked for you - let me know when you’re done.

Note that all those speed limits are unverified. They are produced by Waze’s algorithm that attempts to guess what they should be - and doesn’t do a great job. Until they are verified, or corrected by an editor, they would have no effect in the app, even if the app was displaying speed limits yet.

I do understand your frustration. However the automatic locking system is very important for protecting the 1-2% of most heavily used routes in the UK. Waze HQ pushed us hard to allow it with a maximum lock level of 5: we initially limited the maximum lock level to 3 but later increased it to 4 when we saw how well it worked. Before automatic locks, it would be routine to find major routes “broken” by invalid red arrows or by inexperienced editors disconnecting segments from other segments locked above their level and then unable to rejoin them. Since automatic locks, this is now very rare.

Please feel free to continue to pester us. Part of the “cost” of automatic locking is the increased need for senior editors to service downlock requests. Personally, I consider this a cost well worth bearing.

If you need to request a mass downlock for a large number of segments (as in this case), I am more than happy to comply. Note that you can select multiple segments in your permalink, although they must all be visible on the screen at one time and at a zoom level high enough to be selectable. With the bypass above, for example, you would probably have needed 2 permalinks to cover the whole lot.

You can also, when you have some more experience, consider applying to become an Area Manager. Area Managers are promoted to L3, which puts more auto-locked roads within their reach. We also carefully assess the editing quality of AMs, so it’s easier for senior editors to trust unlock requests and action them with less need to check.

Hi Iain,

All editing done. Thank you VERY much for your help, both with the unlock and with the additional detailed information - very much appreciated.

Regarding the speeds being verified, do I just need to click on the “verified” tickbox adjacent to each speed, or does it need to be verified by a different person? I’m more than happy to quickly jump back in and do so if that’s the case.

Thank you for the hint that multiple permalinks can be inserted too, I’ll do that in future (presumably it saves you some time too?).

If it’s not too much of a problem, these should all be set to 50mph! Cheers.

I definitely agree that a little bit of hassle in the early days is worth it to preserve the integrity of the map.

Many thanks again for your time and help.

Cheers,

Dave

It looks like they’re all verified now. Quite likely, the action of setting a limit automatically verifies it. You certainly don’t need someone else to verify them.

Speed limits on roundabouts are a bit of a tricky question. The vast majority of roundabouts aren’t big enough for drivers to worry about the speed limit whilst they are negotiating the roundabout, dealing with other vehicles and looking for the correct exit. Plus, it can be difficult to decide what the speed limit should be on a roundabout when roads with different speed limits meet there. I’ve done the speed limit on this roundabout, but I generally wouldn’t bother with roundabouts.

Auto-locks restored.

I did pop back and verify a few of them, but half of them were already done.

Good point about the roundabouts - I was perhaps being a little over-keen!

Cheers,

Dave
