Level5→L3 Unlock: Alberta - (Hwy 1,Exit 161A: Hwy 22 S / Br

My Level: 3
Reason for request: These three segments need some work due to the construction done here recently. The exits are no longer “A” and “B”, and the BGS now instructs WB traffic to exit where 161A currently begins; NB traffic exits more or less the same way it’s depicted now, and SB traffic travels along a lane alongside the WB highway lanes to use the circular ramp that’s part of the current 161B exit. It’s easy for me to draw, difficult to explain. There’s probably similar work needing to be done on the EB side of things too.

unlocked.

Please let me know when you’re done so they can be relocked.

Sorry, I guess I need these two segments unlocked as well in order to disconnect and reconnect the nodes. Please & thanks!

Those are unlocked now too!

I believe I have got this done to my satisfaction. I wouldn’t mind if you (or someone) looked over what I’ve done; particularly, a short section of ramp off the actual highway to the split where the two ramps actually go their separate ways, I left unnamed, and the split has custom voice indicators to match the real-world actions being taken.

For what it’s worth, the long ramp to southbound isn’t actually a separate piece of pavement from the westbound lanes of the highway, but the paint on the ground legally prohibits entry/exit from that ramp from the point where I branch it off from the highway.

Let me know if there’s any concerns or questions.

Relocked.

And yes, that is correct use of the gore point.

I’m curious about a few things… First, the original exit segment. Why is it left unnamed, instead of “Exit 161: Hwy 22 / Bragg Creek / Cochrane”, with the following segments named to use Hwy 22 N / S?

Second, the split to N/S. The left segment (to Hwy 22 S) is tagged to give a voice indicator of “Continue”, but the right segment (to Hwy 22 N) is set to “None”. Having not seen this actual exit since the change, I would have expected the north segment to have an “Exit right” or more likely, “Keep Right”…

I don’t have any video or still photos of the new ramp configuration, but basically what they’ve done is paved an extra lane down what used to be the shoulder between the NB exit ramp and the SB exit ramp, so instead of the SB exit ramp being about 35 feet long (from the end of the NB>WB loop, which is gone now), it’s about 250 ft long and starts at where the NB exit is depicted in the aerial photos.

In order to exit SB, signs and paint markings instruct you to move to this new lane and continue straight beneath the overpass and then take the loop that previously and still exists. At the very beginning of that new lane, if you continue exiting right, you go NB.

The rationale for how I set up the voice guidance and segment naming is as follows:

  • The initial branch off the highway’s main lanes will tell you to “Exit right” for either NB or SB, at the appropriate location.
  • The unnamed segment means that it will not provide a name in the above “exit right” instruction. (I believe I recall being taught that back in my early days as an editor.)
  • On the “second” branch, which either goes along the new lane I created for the SB exit, or onto the NB exit ramp, the ramps are named appropriately, to provide the names in spoken directions.
  • The voice direction for “Continue” on the left (SB) choice is so that it will say “Exit right and then continue on Exit 161 Hwy 22 S” etc.
  • The voice direction of “none” on the right (NB) choice is so that you don’t get two "Exit right"s in a row (you just got one to get into that lane). My expectation is that it should say “Exit right onto Exit 161 Hwy 22 N” and so on.

Some day next week, if we don’t actually get 60cm of snow, maybe I can go drive the route and see if what I expect to happen does actually happen.

I’m with you on all of that
My concern is, without knowing how they’ve painted that exit, the “through lane” from the highway exit could be the north or south option. Without instruction guiding left or right, someone could just blindly follow the lines and go the wrong way. (I know, we’ve debated whether or not drivers should take some responsibility and actually look at the signs…) I’d prefer to have that next option be clear - “Exit Right and then Keep Right to…”, or “Exit right and then Keep Left to…” (or “Exit Right and then Continue Straight”, depending on what “straight” is in that situation.)
Akin to this. https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lon=-114.03285&lat=50.99242&zoom=6&segments=70028602

It sounds like you’re saying that the “default” option after exiting the highway is to stay in the left lane, and go south. “Continue” would work for that, but I’d still prefer to have an instruction for the north exit then.

With “None” selected, I’m expecting a NB driver to simply get “Exit right” from Hwy 1, and then no additional instructions.

Bumping to keep on first page.

Bumping again

What is this waiting on at the moment Alex? Is Dry_Bones supposed to validate something?

I’ll see if I can get this resolved this week.

Everything appears ok here. No changes have been made in months and there are no URs. Everything is locked to standard.
