Reason for request: UR (seen on Helen St southeast of the highlighted segment in the PL) indicates that a U-turn is allowed for “vehicles under 6 tons” in the northbound direction only. I drove through this intersection this evening and took the attached photo to support the restricted U-turn allowance. Please update the A node in this segment to allow U-Turns with the appropriate restrictions.
I don’t understand. This is a legal movement at a divided highway intersection (the division is not shown by the segments) and protected by a left turn arrow signal. This should be allowed. I know the vehicle type restrictions aren’t functional in the app yet, but shouldn’t we enable this turn with the restrictions and allow drivers of the restricted vehicles be responsible for obeying the sign?
Or is it that the app/routing engine doesn’t support drivers making U-turns onto the same segment anyway? In that case, I feel the segments should be divided and the appropriate left turn allowances should be put in place, just as they are at the intersection of US route 46 east and NJ route 10 a few miles to the east.
The app doesn’t support giving instructions to U-turns onto a bidirectional segment which you are already on. It is a technical limitation. In the case of a Waze-depicted divided roadway, where the single road is depicted by two opposing, then it CAN be possible via two right left instructions, e.g., “Turn left onto Cross Rd then turn left… Turn left onto Same Rd S”
Even with divided roadways, Waze will often not allow the double-left. it has some programming to avoid them, invoked is specific circumstances. So we would have to divide the roadway, then tweak it to avoid the logic trap.
We have criteria for when to divide a roadway, and I don’t think allowing a few U-turns is considered a factor.
Not trying to burst your bubble, just explaining the limitations of the system.
Thanks so much for the reply. Believe me, I’m definitely not taking it as my bubble being burst. In fact, you confirmed my assumption about how the logic in the software works regarding U-Turns. I really appreciate the feedback. I’m in agreement as to there not being sufficient criteria for dividing the segments here. As such, I’ll mark this thread resolved. What do you recommend I do with the UR? I can put a comment in explaining the functionality limitations to the user, but should I leave it open or mark it closed (solved, NI)?
I believe current consensus is that no map edit=not identified. But I violate that all the time, if I believe I have answered the user’s question or concern.
I would put in a note that Waze has limitations in its U-turn support, and is unable to give a U-turn instruction here at the present time. Close it as solved.
