Level5 Update: Oldham - Failsworth (M60 (ACW))

My Level: 4
Reason for request: I know this Keep Right has been here for ages but I really dont think its needed. It obvisous from the signage what lane you need to be in and if you did go wrong you keep going straight and would get back onto M60 via the A6104.

I suggest a KR here before and it was said its not needed so whats the difference?

Happy to understand better

The guidelines (*) suggest that we don’t have a “keep right” unless either
(1) the lane drop is for more than one lane of the original main road
(2) if you do take the slip by mistake, it’s hard to get back to the main road

I think both these junctions are single lane drops (OK, the slip expands into more than one lane, but only one lane of the original road gets hived off)

The difference is that in one case if you take the wrong road, you just go straight over the roundabout and back onto it.

Whereas in the other case, it’s a more complicated journey, not an immediate return. Actually, this case is pretty marginal, it’s not as if you got swept up on a motorway going at right angles. You would keep on in the same direction, albeit more slowly, but could eventually return to the main road without going significantly further. I think this one could have been called either way.

The only guarantee in these situations is that, whichever way we map it, someone will disagree

(*) there may be a better write-up now, but this is the one I’m aware of https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=164793
