Link gas prices with GasBuddy.com

Hello, i think way more people use gas buddy so you guys should grab gas prices from GasBuddy.com… just a suggestion but everyone I know that drives uses it in my city…

Looks like its all of USA+Canada too

Love waze!

Josh

I presume they partnered with data source(s) that fit within their business model.

Well as it is right now you have to update gas prices from within waze, which is cool too but if gasbuddy and waze linked up they would get more gas price updates

waze is just starting to pick up in my town though… I haven’t seen any gas prices listed

Josh

According to Waze execs, they considered a partnership but could not make it work.

Ah thats too bad, oh well maybe in the future

Just out of curiosity: How stable are gas prices in North America? Can you rely on information that have been submitted a few hours ago?

Over here gas prices change multiple times throughout the day and go up and down by several euro-cents. I wonder whether Waze could really manage to be up-to-date for all gas stations.
Currently prices for 1 liter of Diesel (1 US gal = 3.8 liters) range from 1.30 to 1.50 EUR in my area…

In my area (upstate New York), the prices usually don’t change more than once every 2-3 days. The only major exception to that is in the village that I just moved from, where 3 of the 4 stations near the Interstate have a “3-cents off gas sale day” every Wednesday  – other than that, yes, the prices are reasonably stable around here.

It varies from place to place based on who owns the stations. If there’s a near-monopoly in a region, prices can stay stable for several days, but in competitive places prices can change multiple times in a day. Near me, typically prices will go down 2 or 3 cents a day for a few days, and then jump 20-30 cents at once. The market leader’s stations are all company-owned, so on the day the company decides to increase the price, every one of its stations will go up to the same price at once at around 9:00 am, which gives buyers about a 4-5 hour window to find lower prices somewhere else before all the competitors raise theirs to match. On those days, if Waze is showing the 8:00 am prices all day, they will be useless.

Waze execs, should try harder to develop a GasBuddy partnership. Anything is possible, do not give up!

While it sounds like a good idea, I don’t see it happening because by getting into the biz of listing gas prices, Waze is getting into competition with Gasbuddy, so the only way that such a relationship is likely to occur is by Waze paying GB moola. It could happen, but I wouldn’t bet the house on it.

Even in its current unfinished state I’m finding Waze’s implementation more usable than GB’s.

It’s all my phone’s fault for using Tapatalk.

bgodette - why do you say that (examples), for I do not see it? How long have you used GasBuddy? I still do not see ANY gas stations popping up on the Waze PA map. I can enter prices, but that app is very clunky.

GasBuddy does not show me stations along my route, it can’t because it has no idea what my route is. GB doesn’t allow me to add a waypoint along my current route, again because GB has no concept of navigation, only radius.

You also seem to be fundamentally misunderstanding how gas station display works in Waze. The only time you’ll see a gas station show up on the navigation map are those that are paying for advertising. To see a map of stations near you, or along your route while navigating, you have to SEARCH, just like with GB, but without all the clunkyness of having to switch apps and GB not knowing where you’re going so only giving you results near you.

Thanks bgodette
Is there a way in Waze to set the search radius/tolerance for how far off route to report gas stations?

I would strongly encourage the folks at Waze to continue and pursue Gasbuddy. My brother uses GasBuddy. I started using Waze. Between the two, we now use both apps very often. There are obvious advantages to both.

What can we do as users of Waze to help make this happen? There are considerable advantages that would help promote both Waze and Gasbuddy to become long term applications for smart devices.

I would also say if Gas Buddy doesn’t get on the bandwagon with this, they will be left. They are so specialized that when a good app like Waze takes off, they will be left behind or bought. I think it’s in their best interest to pursue merging with a service like this soon or we will see them fade away.

As far as I understand it, Waze uses OPIS for its gas price updates. http://www.opisnet.com/

I agree with y’all about using GB. Much better integration and higher usage.

Heck, at least for now until Waze and GB hop in the sack, it would be great to see Waze use “auto-puntuation” and add the decimal point after the dollar amount instead of having to do it manually like it is now when updating gas prices.

I for one have stopped using GB now that we have Waze Gas. I’m in a very busy sector of new Jersey near NYC. I have found that Waze’s prices are more accurate, even before I update/verify them.

There is also speculation that Waze is using gas prices from YP (Yellow Pages). I have no idea if YP is getting their data from somewhere else (such as OPIS).

It’s a shame it didn’t work out between them but I cannot find a reason why gb would want to get on with Waze without some form of money. I agree gb is being left behind but that’s the nature of apps that do one thing. They might do it the best but for most of my needs an app that does the job pretty good is just fine. Which is why I think Waze will come out on top even without partnering up with gb. If I just want to check gas prices while I am not driving then gb is my go to app. If I am traveling then Waze will soon be replacing gb.
