The problem is that Waze will only route down a private road if there is NO other way to get to the destination. This means that for drivers who are destined for the area beyond the “gate” they will get routed around the long way. This is undesirable behaviour as a journey of 50m (ie. immediately past the “gate”) can turn into hundreds of metres.
If there is only one way in and out then there is no need to use a gate because Waze will only direct a driver into the area if their destination is within that area.
A “local traffic” sign is not the same as a road closed sign. Waze the ability to close roads but not designate local traffic areas.
So as far as I know there is no way to penalise the route if the destination is not within the “local traffic area”. Thus I believe this is not a solvable problem given the tools available in the editor at this time.
If there is an issue with increased numbers of drivers using a particular road (“rat runs”), it is up to the locals and the relevant authorities to find a solution to manage that increase.
We had one situation where drivers were using the back roads to bypass the congestion on the main road in the mornings. They are valid roads, available to all drivers, so can be used in navigation of routes.
To stop the increase in levels of traffic using the road, the local authorities ended up turning one section of the road at one intersection into cul-de-sacs. They fixed the issue they were having, we did not “hack” the map to fix the issue.
Drivers are always going to find “alternative” routes, from the main roads, to speed up their travel times.
Unless it is an actual private installation, such as a military base, government or similar, if it is a valid road and part of the road network, we map it for all users.
Out of curiosity, how many “gated” communities are there?
If a driver is going to ignore a “Road Closed” because a navigation device is telling them to do, I would question that drivers ability in controlling a motor vehicle.
Glomp, Kai has brought a thread discussion about don’t trust the purple line, where we are discussing Logan Road Service Road across to a new thread, and now it has branched into a different direction.
Kai, we already have a thread for this discussion, which has heaps of background, and reasoning from more experienced posters than you or I. I directed you to it by private message. I think it would be beneficial if you contributed to that thread- called don’t trust the purple line, rather than having two separate threads that discuss similar topics.
It makes it much harder later to find relevant on topic material if we have multiple threads that discuss similar material when a new report comes in that is complaining about a topic that us editors have already discussed and we need to revisit it.
It is much easier if the discussion takes place in one thread.
