Los Angeles, CA-134 / I-5 interchange

Going east on CA 134, at the junction of I-5, the freeway splits in half. Half continues on as CA 134 east, and half goes to I-5 south. I was going through there with my phone set to go to Pasadena, which means to go straight on CA 134. But the navigator was silent on this. It should give a direction about ‘stay left to continue on CA 134 east’ or something like that. An out-of-towner could get into real trouble here without that direction.

It also has the same issue at the CA 134 / I-210 junction in Pasadena. Going west on I-210, if you go straight, it turns into CA 134 west. To remain on I-210 west, you have to take the exit on the right. Again, the navigator is silent on that. When it was navigating from Pasadena to Burbank, the proper thing to do is to go straight onto CA 134 west, but the last direction it gave when I got on the freeway was to get on to I-210 west. Again, an out-of-towner could get in trouble without proper directions. The navigator should say something like ‘stay left and continue on CA 134 west’.

I second this idea, it really should tell you something, even if it is like when the 118 ends at the 210, it says (left ramp) or (right ramp) at the end. Way better then silence.

I think I’m starting to understand a bit more about how this works. Perhaps this segment needs to be redefined as a ‘ramp’ instead of a ‘freeway’:

The thing is, yes, it’s the continuation of CA-134, but at that point, the freeway is four lanes, and it splits in two. Two lanes go to I-5 south and two continue on as CA-134 east. So effectively, it’s an exit and it should have a verbal direction associated with it. I saw that the US-101/CA-170/CA-134 interchange does the right thing when driving from 101 eastbound onto 134 eastbound. It looks like the connector there is defined as a ramp, so it gives directions instead of thinking that it’s just an obvious continuation of the road.
