Low Emission Zone

Couple of UR’s have popped up regarding lack of low emission zone, don’t think we can do anything about this. It is effectively a toll, but only for certain vehicles.

I assume once we get vehicle types we can add it the same/similar way to what Iain did with londons CC.

Not sure vehicle types will cover it as it is more related to age. A modern HGV is OK but an older Land Rover Defender 90 van or pickup is not although the estate version is OK. To further complicate matters if it is really old (before 1971 I think) then it is exempt!

True, but surely its a better fit than anything, I think if we were to ask waze to implement emission based vehicles they would tell us where to go

Despite living by it/in it I can’t say I have ever paid attention to it cause it didn’t affect me.

If Waze did enable vehicle differentiation by level of emissions, then it would be possible to complicate the Congestion Charging Zone entry points further to allow for vehicles eligible for the Ultra-Low Emissions Discount to have their own entry-points without the toll! What fun

LOL - so what would that be, 3 lanes for each entry point.

I think I can guess Iains answer to doing that.

Hi,

I think, at some point, Drivers need to actually be aware of where they are going and read road signs. If they want to ignore all traffic signs and blindly go wherever their satnav tells them to go, they will pay the consequences. The choice of where the drivers decides to go is ultimately the drivers choice.

German cities have “emission regulations” (and I have my nice green Class 4 stickers to prove it) and certain classes cannot enter cities depending on some variable rules, time of day and what direction the wind is blowing in! You have to be aware what is in place where you are going and if you can’t travel via x, then divert.

I would be ignoring this for the time being. Waze has better and more constructive things to be doing than this…

Des. . .

I agree, it’s all far too complex. Despite living only 500 yards from a tube station but just outside Greater London and for reasons known only to my wife we decided one day to drive into the congestion charging zone in her Smart car which she thought was exempt from the charge. Everyone knows Smart car are exempt she proudly maintained until the penalty charge notice came through the door, that’s when we discovered they are exempt if you register them in advance for a £10 annual fee!

The moral is you need to do your homework first, it’s no good waiting until you pass the sign at the side of the road that says Low Emission or Congestion Charging Zone.

We knew about the German zones but not the ones in our own area!

I had a feeling this would be everyones views, just thought I would check before telling the user.

My 2 cents, to support both sides of the argument:

  1. Waze targets cars and “The LEZ does not apply to cars or motorcycles” (TFL website)

  2. The reason for Waze to know about tolls, restrictions, etc. is to provide useful directions. If I don’t want to pay the Congestion Charge, I want Waze to provide routes around the zone. I would give up with Waze if it kept routing through central london and I had to keep ignoring it to work out my own route around the zone. They may even be a better route rather than skirting the outside perimeter.

So, yes it is my responsibility to ‘look out the window’ but I also want my navigation solution to be as helpful as possible.
