There has been a lot of discussion of lower case street names elsewhere in the forum (see here for example). In Texas we have a long history of Spanish (and French) influence on street names which leads to streets starting with “el”, “le”, “la”, “de” and so on.
The general arguments elsewhere have been:
(1) this is the US and street names are proper names and all proper names start with a capital letter
(2) the sign is all upper case, so we need to start the name with an upper case letter
(3) these are not English names so we should honor the capitalization of the language involved
From what I have seen in Austin, argument (2) is true but if we followed that reasoning then the street names everywhere would be all upper case. There are several streets starting with a lower case letter sprinkled around in south Austin. Since I accept argument (1), I have changed a few to be capitalized but thought maybe I should ask before I “fix” them all.
We have the same scenario in DFW also. I have been changing uppercase as I come across them because the signs are uppercase. I try to match what Waze says as close as possible to what the driver sees.
I have been finding some in Houston also. Do I change them all. Some I can see are not correct in street view and some it is hard to make out the signs.
I sure will and thanks. One thing is that I do not know how to do the tts test without have to drive there. Can this be done through the editor or live map.
