M1 Temporary/average speed limits

Hey guys,

Looks like there’s a (fairly) new section of temporary 50mph speed limits on the M1 near Northampton.

It’s generated a stack of speed limit reports. What’s the situation regarding these temporary speed limits? Do we update them, or leave at 70mph with a suitable ‘Thank you for the report but we don’t update temporary speed limits’ response?

Waze can’t cope with variable speed limits. For these, we map the maximum (normally 70mph) and explain the deficiency to UR reporters (I have a standard cut-and-paste response now).

But I think you are asking about “temporary permanent” speed limits for roadworks? Depends how long the roadworks are going to last, but if it’s more than a few weeks, I think it’s worth mapping the new speed limit (and any new cameras) provided that an editor is willing to take responsibility for keeping track of the works and restoring the map afterwards. We don’t want to clutter the map with lower speed limits that aren’t going to get reverted until the UR’s build up after the roadworks have finished.

Thanks for the reply. I’m only a level 1 editor and don’t really want to take responsibility for such a major road. Was just asking to see if I could help close down any unnecessary URs if it was just a case of advising we don’t update them.

I’m happy for my name to be splashed across this as there are quite a few SLURs that we should obliterate, I mean fix.

I’m guessing it is the J19 to J16 managed motorway works which is set to last until March 2017. Let me try and put together and unlock / update request. If we haven’t pinpointed the start & end of these works I’ll make a note next time I drive it, but might not be for a few weeks.

I’m sure there are plenty more speed limit UR’s around in need of attention, and if not, some guidance on dealing with the car park Map Problems should be coming out soon.

It’s not really new, I’m up and down there usually once every week or two and noticed they seem to change some of the average speed sections which makes it somewhat difficult to place accurately.

It runs from Northampton to just north of the M6 but there is a section in the middle where they have turned the average speed camera’s round 90 degrees and put the speed limit back to 70 mph. This unrestricted section is from roughly a mile north of Watford Gap services to probably two miles south of the M6.

The UR’s do probably map the average speed sections fairly accurately so even if you just use those to set the 50mph sections you wont be too far out but camera locations will be a bit hit or miss.
