Hi all,
There is some inconsistent usage of Private Road segments in Maine. I’ve written up a clarification of how national standards should be applied in Maine:
Special roads
In particular,
- Only add driveways when needed for navigation. One driveway may then require others on either side to avoid routing the neighbors up that driveway. We can easily end up with a lake surrounded by a hundred (unneeded) driveways.
- Do not mark a road as PVT just because it is privately owned, i.e. not maintained by the municipality. Only gated roads should be PVT unless there is another compelling reason, as discussed in the national standards.
- If we have an issue with improper routing through residential neighborhoods, please raise that with me or one of the other NER leadership team.
Thanks!
Robert
