Construction and placement of centre dividers over much of the Highway 1 - Malahat on Vancouver Island was completed within the last few weeks, including installation of dedicated u-turn routes (such as this and this), and additional turn restrictions for connecting streets. There’s a significant amount of work to be done to separate the highway into North/South lanes where appropriate, and update turn restrictions. Extension of the “Freeway” designation is probably appropriate for a good chunk of the Malahat.
How is something like this normally tackled? (I’m thinking of the organizational perspective).
[ I don’t mind tackling it (with guidance, of course!) or helping out, but (for my part) the work would be spread out due to competing priorities… and I’m just a lowly L2 (the whole route is restricted to L5). ]
On the point of dedicated U-Turn routes, I’d like to resurrect a conversation in that regard (see link)… specifically in regard to the kind of U-Turns linked above. Without them, the routing engine is going to generate some poor instructions.

I dislike splitting highways unless absolutely necessary. Take a look at the SFPR – it’s split (from what I know of it), but is a two-way set of segments.
SFPR = South Fraser Perimeter Road? If so, I’ve driven it several times… long sections of it are very split.
As to splitting, I hear ya and agree (yes, I’ve read the Best Map Editing Practices on this
)! Yet, I continue to be confused by seeing roads of “lesser” flow than a freeway being split (here’s one example McKenzie Avenue). And then, there is this wiki document – see under “Roads”. Anyway, I’m sure that’s a story for another day.
But as to the other questions. Noticing that parts of the Malahat drive are designated as Freeway (perhaps erroneously – especially at Finlayson Arm Road). To stay consistent, they should probably be downgraded, or the newly divided sections of the highway should be upgraded. Thoughts?
Also, any chance of resurrection the U-Turn route question (I’m a little passionate about that one  )?
TIA
I agree with docKB, only split if absolutely necessary and the two way is causing issues. In the case of the Malahat, I would keep it as two way rather than split it.
To answer your other questions, the lesser roads should all be unsplit. This is something I’ve been working on the the GVA to help prevent U-Turn routing on split roads. Try to consider the guidelines for splitting, and the vast majority of split roads don’t meet the guidelines. (Highways etc excluded)
For the U-Turn routes where there is a specific area to pull off the Malahat and go in the other direction and is signposted as a U-Turn route, I would add these. Now that the concrete barrier is up, you’re supposed to use these to access addresses on the opposite side of the road. If they’re not mapped, waze will send you on some crazy detours…
