Major vs Minor Highway?

I’m a bit confused even after reading the major vs minor highway bit on the wiki. I was wondering in Altus OK, would us 283 and us 62 be major or minor? That both appear to be a mix of coloring based on whoever was editing them. My original thought was ‘minor’ but I wanted to confirm as I’m new to editing and don’t want to muck anything up. Could someone with some experience help clarify this for me please?

Thanks for asking before editing!

There are a couple of steps here:

First, pull up the functional classification map provided by the state and see what they classify it as.
http://www.okladot.state.ok.us/Maps/ufc/map_ufc_altus.pdf

Then, compare that classification with the Waze chart, consider the factors that the Waze chart uses, and select the proper type.

For example:
US-283 is listed as “Other Principle Arterial” for most of the city. Per the Waze chart this makes it a Major Highway.

US-283 north of E1600 Rd is listed as “Minor Arterial”. Per the Waze chart, since it is still a US HWY, it is still a Major Highway.

If what is mapped in Waze disagrees, particularly in non-metro areas of OK, then the conversion probably hasn’t been done yet.

If you need help feel free to PM me.

If you want examples, hop over to Norman. It has FC completely done (as well as Moore, OKC, and Guthrie) and should serve as a good example since there are many different types including roads that change from one type to another (State Hwy 9 is a good one).

Hope that helped.

Ah thank you…283 was the big issue. It’s minor, it’s major, people are classifying it as all sorts of things. Also curious…canal roads…are these supposed to be mapped? It appears they were automapped at some point. Should I look at removing them or simply mark them as dirt roads or potentially private roads? They really are not used for traffic, they are for the irrigation district and farmers.

I’ll have to let the more senior editors answer this one.

You’re one of the senior editors in the state.

FrostByghte sent me examples of the canal access roads and I think that the users of these are not the target user base of Waze. Many seem to be marked for No Trespassing, they are clearly part of the mass import from 2009, and we have no GPS markers for these roads. Also, they add no value for Waze users as navigational aids or alternative routes and most would be illegal for use anyways.

I would say that these should not be mapped in Waze and the ones brought in from the import should be removed.

Be sure to remove the unnecessary junctions and geo-points left by their intersection with regular road segments. Work with thoughtfulness and care so that valid roads with historical data are not destroyed.

Thank you for taking on this task and let us know if you need any help or advice.

I’ll work on cleaning those up around my area at least. Thank you for the help.
