Massive NM editing and damage without contacting Vectorspace

While it’s not required to contact me about editing in New Mexico, massive editing and FC changes have occurred (since I was ejected from the Champs group) in the state that have wiped out years of route optimization with the benefit of following arbitrary FC rules from those who do not live in the state. These changes have lost the state additional editors because of the rude behavior of the imposing champs.

For instance, SR-26, between Hatch and Deming is a key route that people prefer to take if they wish to avoid the longer route through Las Cruces. I worked with local editors and drivers there to test various routes and optimize the route preference over the period of several weeks. It worked just fine. Now nnote came through and expanded his AZ Functional Classification experiment to NM, thus destroying all that work and effort.

Quite a bit of FC changes have been made across the state, sweeping in changes without any contact or discussion about the issues.

I have not been contacted once by any of those newly rushing in to editing in New Mexico now that I am not a champ, even to ask why something was a particular way. I have heard specific instances of my editing and approach being demeaned by champs in their conversation with other editors. Many of the claims were quite wrong and out of context. That’s not very professional in any circumstance, but certainly justifies the impressions I had of the RCs and Champs when I posted privately in the Champs Forum about such behavior and suggestions to change it.

I will make an effort to not address the contradictory portions of the original post but offer a response as to the editing efforts being made in New Mexico.
A small group of editors have offered their time and commitment to assist in the editing of New Mexico waze map, they are indeed implementing the FC per national standards but this is an in-process action and can no way be deemed complete.
Any and all local input is appreciated and encouraged, and any deviation will need discussion and consensus, as well as documented on the state wiki.
Professionalism is a key factor on public posts and the bashing/harassing of individuals should be avoided at all costs.

Hi Ply8808…

You didn’t identify or address any items that were contradictory in the original post, nor did you address the key issue of how things were being handled in New Mexico. It appears that you’ve ignored the substance of the original post.

This small group of editors (none of which are local) has done a few things. First, they are unidentified and did not introduce themselves to local editors. Secondly, they did not seek out the local editors that had touched the road segments in the past to contact them through PM. Third, this is a seemingly pretentious act that shows extreme entitlement and disregard for local editors. Such action is inherently disrespectful of local editors past work done in this area. Fourth, and apparently most telling, the act is being performed by Champs, who should have a better standard of behavior than this as it is behavior that they have stated is not appropriate. Fifth, the actions have frustrated local editors.

Sixth, this may be an in-process action that is not complete; however, the damage is complete and erasure of past work and intent irreversible without much work. At the least it is disrespectful to those many editors that came before in this region and should speak to all editors that their work is highly ephemeral – likely to be erased at the whim of any careless editor, or champ, that may come by and not seek to work in a team-like manner.

Apparently local input is not appreciated and encouraged, because none was sought until the damage to the map and the editing community already occurred. The wiki itself is shifting and changing and local editor insight and contribution is one of the great strengths of Waze – one that is destroyed by those how naively take a single rule and try to apply it everywhere in the same way. The actions of the Champs involved have truly damaged the map in New Mexico and the editing community there, which is unfortunate. The RCs and Champs themselves do not follow the Wiki exactly in all locations as demonstrated by their own preferential actions and editing and by the great diversity expressed in the state wiki pages. Using the Wiki guidance as a justification for this action is feeble rational.

If you review the original post, it was professional and stated facts and did not include any bashing or personally derogatory statements. Unless of course, if you believe that to question a champ is unprofessional. The champ identified was from the last editor of that segment that was changed as noted. There are others involved as you mention, so the intent was not to focus upon one person. There are numerous other changes in the Farmington area that have destroyed local editor knowledge in providing a preferential route all because stringent Functional Classification was imposed without thinking about the effect. That is really sad.

What seems unprofessional to me is the behavior of the champs that I have posted here. To these claims there is no response because perhaps a champ can do whatever they wish, with the exception, I suppose, of challenging champs about their behavior or approach when it damages the map and discourages local editors.

Not to step “in it” as a new Wazer - there is no indication in the program about the wiki or any restrictions to edits. After a few approved adds, one is allowed to participate. I am sorry this has been a problem here - but maybe there can be better notice through the ap, rather than relying on a possible connection with the Wiki.

Greetings LizzardLaw,
Welcome to the forums and waze community.
Please forgive me if I am missing the basis of your post and feel free to clarify or correct me.
New editors are welcome and encouraged to become part of our growing community.
We discuss many items in the forums to gain consensus on guidelines that may not be established or gray areas that need clarification.
The wiki is our book of guidance, we should follow those guidelines and discuss items which need clarification or possible changes, but we do so as a community and not as individuals.
If you look through some of the wiki pages you can see how vast the information is and support of this in the app would not be effective, but it is a good suggestion that the app may refer users to the wiki for reference on editing guidelines.
I will offer a couple key wiki pages for starting editors:
https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Waze_Map_Editor
https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Common_editor_mistakes
Please feel free to start a new topic in the NM forum for questions or thoughts on the state and thank you for the participation.

I’m a new “editor” here in Alto/Ruidoso NM - and wonder how to find an Area Manager - or a champ, or whoever can review my edits to approve some places I’ve added. I’ve re-named several roads (our County re-named them several years ago and the old names were still on the maps) and added our local hospital’s info as well as Ski Apache, the ZipLine Tour, and some local Country Clubs that need to be approved.

Welcome Santclan1973,
I received your PM and will take a look at the area later today.
We can then find someone to assist you in the area to get you started on this adventure.
Welcome aboard and appreciate your assistance
