Metro Atlanta is currently reviewing functional classification and has posted it’s proposed 2014 maps online at http://www.atlantaregional.com/about-us/board–committees/transportation-coordinating/functional-classification-review.
There appear to be some changes, but this is posted for two reasons - to give a heads up on possible changes that may need to be made later this summer and to provide a map showing the current classifications for editing purposes.

I have a call in to them now.
Presuming worse case that the FC maps will no longer be available, the KISS system we were using meets the minimum segment-type standards of the new FC-based system, so there is no urgency to go out and change everything/anything just yet. What the new FC-based system does is make it permissible to increase (not decrease) a segment type if its FC supported the change, e.g. a county road with an FC rating of principal arterial, is a Waze major highway. Without the FC information, for consistency’s sake we have few options than to stick to the current standard. To review:
Interstate = freeway
US Hwy = major
State Hwy = minor
County Hwy = primary

{Edit} 4/22/14 – Have spoken with and provided an explanatory email to the GA DOT.
GA DOT’s response is they pulled the FC maps down from the web site because they are outdated, didn’t reflect 2010 census urban boundaries, and were still using the old FC system. They are undergoing a review process not expected to be finalized until August 2014. It will probably be September before the updated maps are published, but they do intend to make them available online again.
In the meantime (head nod to wmadjones) the proposed FC maps for the Atlanta metro area –- also undergoing review as part of the same project – are online. The state FC listing is updated and annotated accordingly.(https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/National_resources/USA/Functional_classification).
That’s the best information we have going forward. I recommend we adopt GA DOT’s proposed FC changes in Atlanta metro rather than waiting for a final product some months from now. If we have to backtrack a little if the changes don’t get approved, it doesn’t seem like a big deal.
We do not have anything similar for other Georgia areas, so recommend in those places we just stay aligned with the minimum standard as outlined in the previous post until the updated FC maps are available.
As additional info, when the updated FC maps become available, GA DOT will likely not use PDFs, but GeoTraqs (http://www.dot.ga.gov/informationcenter/maps/geotraqs/Pages/default.aspx).
Thanks for the update. I know mwhead has been doing a great job getting the US highways upgraded to major in the Atlanta area. I’ll work on the areas I can access to ensure everything else fits the new standards.
The Atlanta Regional commission has approved the new Major Arterials map. Note this ONLY applies to major arterials. There is also a table outlining the specifics.
I’ll work on updating the parts of Atlanta I have access to (most of Henry, Dekalb, Fulton south of Sandy Springs and Gwinnett), but if anyone else wants to spot check to make sure everything is accurate, that would be great.
Minor arterial and collector changes are supposed to be reviewed and approved by the end of November.
