The main thing to start with is to migrate the pages we have from the wiki (which is locked and can’t be edited any more) to Wazeopedia. There’s a fiddly process for doing that (that I haven’t looked into in great detail) that involves nominating somebody to do it and then them getting Waze to convert the pages and move them over.
Once they’re in Wazeopedia we should be able to edit them again, so any change we make about road naming (for example) can be made once we’ve agreed what those changes are.
Yeah, I don’t either. I think we have to nominate one (or more) people to be the community Wazeopedia editors and they then get edit permissions and can migrate the old pages from the wiki to Wazeopedia.
I know @lsin023 is interested in this too, so I’m hopeful that between all of us we can get this done. I’ve had migrating the pages on my todo list for about a year now and haven’t quite got around to it…
The main thing is migrate the vast number of pages (all two of them ) in the existing wiki. Once we’ve done that then we can bring them up to date, and then edit with any naming policy changes we decide on.
It’s worth writing down some other stuff that we do but have never documented, such as how we name ramps and any conventions about speed limit setting. I think we set city boundaries based on where the name sign for a town/city/village appears (or the first speed limit sign, if there’s no name sign), but I’m not sure whether that ever got written down.
Once we can edit in Wazeopedia, it’d be worth writing some more stuff too, such as a page for your tutorial on how to get WME to display townland boundaries.
I did write a document last summer intended as a guide for UK editors helping out with the Ireland map. It contained most of the stuff from the wiki pages but probably had a lot of other conventions we have that also never got written down (such as whether to use English or Irish placenames) and some of my own editing habits that are conventions but maybe never got decided on.
I think a lot of our editing habits are similar to the UK practice, since the road layouts and designs are broadly similar and we also drive on the correct side of the road - with just a few deviations because of the small local differences, or the other things we do a little differently just because we like them (such as having no brackets around the cardinal directions on motorway names, which I think looks nicer).
All that said, we don’t need to write down everything, nor do we need to formally (or informally - we’re a small community) make a decision on everything. We also don’t want to duplicate what’s in the global pages either.
Like with everything else at Waze HQ, if migrating is going to take a long time, it might be faster just to rewrite those pages :lol:

Good idea! I learned most of what I know about the specifics of editing in Ireland from yourself. It might be worth re-reading that huge email conversation we had last year for some information to include in wiki pages. If I remember correctly, you gave me a lot of information in that.
Largely similar. In my opinion, one thing to emphasise for UK editors editing in Ireland is the abbreviations. I always have to double check them since some things are abbreviated in the UK that aren’t in Ireland and vice versa. Also, is it incorrect to add a parking lot road loop for petrol stations? I have seen cases where these aren’t added in Ireland, but there is typically one for every petrol station in the UK.
Absolutely right. In fact, we really just need editing rights on Wazeopedia and then we could just copy and paste the content from those two pages. I’ll be talking to some Waze HQ people on Saturday, and this is on my list of things to talk to them about.
Have you see many of those? I may have seen one once, but I think they’re almost unheard-of.
Funny: the abbreviations on the Ireland wiki page came directly from the same source as the UK abbreviations and was dependent on that TTS does - so any difference in practice is more a matter of unconscious habit than anything else.
True, I’ve maybe only seen it a couple of times doing Co. Monaghan, but I’ve seen random 50 zones where there is a “small” collection of houses.
I think sometimes those are technically villages … maybe. If there’s a pub or a shop (or a school or a church) there then I try to work out what the name is and assign it to the segment(s).
Following discussions here, changes and corrections were made on both abbreviations and TTS. Wiki pages were updated accordingly too.
I would suggest that we review UK Editing Policies and Guidelines and create a similar thread. It’s clear and complete. Afterwards, we can create our Wazeopedia from it.
(Our Wiki shut down before we had the time to complete it! :roll: )
Yes - considering we just have two pages, the simplest thing would just be to get set up with a Wazeopedia editing account, copy-and-paste the text over, then reformat and update as necessary. Simple!
Just a heads-up; some progress was made and from my understanding, only the final step is pending. HQ will make me an admin for the IE page, and I will then be able to add anyone as an editor.
Strange problem you are having. I too cannot create anything on that wiki.
I don’t understand why Wazeopedia is a huge collection of Wiki’s rather than one big wiki. I can sign in and edit/create pages on this wiki, however: https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/Commons/Ireland
Maybe HQ wants us to build up our Wiki there first before moving it to the “proper” wiki?
Edit 2: Maybe I’m being silly and everyone gets access to that commons wiki. Maybe we just have to wait for changes to take effect on the main Ireland wiki?
