Minor Closures or Construction

68th St – from Plaza Center Avenue to Plaster Creek from Jun 9 to Aug 29 “2-way traffic will be maintained.” according to the Kent Co Road Commission “Primary Construction” page.

4 Mile Rd NW fr Walker Ave to Old Orchard Dr closed to thru traffic from May 11 to Sep 27 according to Kent Co Road Commission “Primary Construction” page.

TBTRs work, but I would recommend a segment restriction before TBTRs for most construction. It’s usually much less work to penalize a route that would potentially use that segment. You had to create six separate TBTRs for Patterson, but it can also be done with one segment restriction (or two if you count the “copy same restrictions to opposite direction” as a second step). You’re in good shape following the Road Closures wiki. I would also append “(Construction Zone)” to that Patterson segment until construction is completed, consistent with the wiki guidance.

If the road were truly closed, I would reconnect the west segment and add restrictions. I’ve only had two cases where restrictions have not been enough to penalize a route, and disconnects were used as a last resort. If this were something like 28th St, you may have that problem, but this is dirt 108th St outside of any urban area. In reality, the road is not closed though–it’s closed to thru traffic–which is a layer of complexity that probably isn’t worth considering since there are only four or five houses/farms on that road. The odds that even one resident on that segment uses Waze are probably small. If you really wanted to penalize the route for thru traffic and still have the best possible experience for those four homes though, you could connect on both ends, refrain from adding any restriction, and penalize thru traffic by temporarily making the segment a Private Road until construction is done. Keep in mind though that captnkeegs has been a frequent contributor and started well before restrictions became available though, so the disconnect could just be habit from prior to that functionality. He’s also an AM for the area, so tread lightly :-).

I wasn’t aware of a segment restriction feature. Maybe that’s part of the Toolbox? I’ve been thinking about checking that script out. Thanks!

I’ve been having fun with the Validator script, thanks to one of the senior editors that hang out in Chat that pointed it out to me (HavanaDay, if I recall which one correctly…Chatters have all been very helpful). Lots of stuff in the Muskegon/Ottawa counties area that I can chip away at with that script!

Thanks. I’m waiting until around the start date of the construction (July 12?) to insert the (Construction Zone) labels. Depending on how frequently Waze is updating tiles around that date, I may try to time it so the labels appear on the date construction is scheduled to start. [emoji4]

Yeah, that’s why I’m deferring any “human resources management” tasks to a higher rank editor (if anybody decides to PM captnkeegs about new “standard procedures”). I don’t want to ruffle any feathers and I certainly don’t want to tick off my one of my AMs. [emoji4]

Thanks for your quick response and guidance!

I typed this with Tapatalk, so I hope the formatting of this message turns out well. Haven’t found a “Preview” option in the app yet. [emoji6]

It’s actually standard to the editor. If you highlight a segment, an “Add Restriction” button will appear at the bottom of the segment properties in the left menu.

Wow…Thanks! I made all those edits and never noticed/experimented with segment restriction editing button. I focused only on getting turn restrictions done and failed to READ the information on the screen.

I’m glad we have these community resources such as mentors, forums, chat and, of course, the wiki. With a task as complicated as producing proper routing for drivers, it helps to get help on the details from all angles.

Glad to have you mentoring in Michigan!

Yeah this is a much better idea, I’ve changed it to a private drive but maintained all turns.

Closer on 8 Mile between Beck and Taft in Northville. Due to end 140829.

Closure Info

Is it fully closed to traffic?

I have a friend swinging by tomorrow to verify the closure status. I.E. full, lane, etc. I will update accordingly then. For now I was going off UR’s that simply stated that it was closed and the construction info listed above.

Just submitted a Closure request for I-75 N and S in the UP for this construction through August: http://www.michigan.gov/mdot/0,4616,7-151-9620_11057-330242--,00.html

The last three words of the Detour instructions (“to Pearl Street.”) confuse me though.

Anyway, I hailed SkiDooGuy (via Chat) and he assigned the necessary restriction for this ramp. We “argued” a little about what particular bridge we think is under construction or why MDOT has a different timeline for this exit than the I-196 exits. I can drive there in the next few days to check for us, unless he wants to instead.

Thanks again, SkiDooGuy!

Grand Rapids 44th St from US-131 to Division Ave will be closed (at least to thru traffic) until Oct 31.

My segment time restrictions should be until Oct 30 but, following SkiDooGuy’s lead, I’m banking on them needing an extra day to pick up cones.

UR prompted me to investigate and discover this a couple weeks ago. I finally got around to posting it here. I figure I’d better post this in case I forget about it come October.

All,

Carpenter Rd is being resurfaced between Washtenaw Ave and Packard St. There are long-term lane closures on that segment of Carpenter and intersection restrictions (reduced lanes) at both intersections (Carpenter/Washtenaw and Carpenter/Packard).

https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lon=-83.68027&lat=42.24557&layers=677&zoom=7&segments=80301557,23069113,80301556,23067733

The construction is expected to last all summer into mid-autumn.

http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2013/10/carpenter_road_to_be_rebuilt_b.html

While I have seen the link to the wiki instructions on handling long-term construction (https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Road_Naming_(USA)#Construction_zones_and_closed_roads) , basically, adding (Construction Zone) to the end of the road names in those segments, is there any benefit to doing so? That is, does it actually help weight roads for avoidance and/or make them more sensitive to real-time traffic flow, such as if traffic becomes backed up at the intersection due to reduced lanes/no turn lanes?

Or is it merely a visual prompt–the drivers using the Waze app see the road name with “(Construction Zone)” and might think to manually detour away from the area before reaching the congestion?

If it is worthwhile to make the change to the name (and if there are other editing changes that are useful), the road segments are all Rank 3.

An example of the specific changes:
Carpenter/Packard intersection has all directions reduced from four-lane roads with dedicated left-turn lanes to only two-lane road without dedicate turn lanes.

Thanks,
SDM

Appending “(Construction Zone)” only changes the visual in the app as well as the name of the road for turn instructions. There is no effect on routing or penalties assigned that would help deter drivers from a segment with (Construction Zone) after the name. If there are significant backups or other problems, the decline would factor in over time to Waze’s normal routing guidance. If the road is slower due to construction or any other factor, Waze factors that in with the historical average. Real-time traffic jams or construction reports via the app would also have a better impact on drivers in the app than the limited amount of things we can do in the Editor.

If there were more than lane reductions such as some turns not allowed at all or at various points throughout the day, or if there were full segment or directional closures, we can help account for those types of routing changes using the Editor (check out time based turn restrictions and segment/partial restrictions in the wiki). In the case of Carpenter, check out the Point Place at the corner of Carpenter and Central that another editor logged as a note (…), but apart from disabling some of the left turns, they did not follow the wiki construction procedures that you referenced (…).

I went ahead and lowered the lock on a few of the segments to rank 1, so feel free to add (Construction Zone) if you want. In my opinion, it’s also better to log a time-based turn restriction rather than fully disable the turns. You can schedule those for all or part of a day for whatever date range you select, and you have the ability to add a note about the construction edits there. Plus, when the restriction expires, routing will return to normal immediately, whereas an editor needs to manually go back in and re-enable the turn when a full disable is used. Rather than make these changes right away, I’ve left it as-is for educational purposes, so if you wanted to have a go at adjusting the area to more closely adhere to the wiki guidance, please do so.

Typically, I only adjust if there is a closure somewhere or if there is a major disturbance of the normal traffic pattern. Part of that is related to time. There’s a lot of minor construction, and Waze is not a full time job, so lots of projects where there is minimal to no change slip through the cracks.

120th Ave between Rich St and Lake Michigan Dr is closed to thru traffic.

There is a concrete barrier at the Lake Michigan Dr junction preventing access to Lake Michigan Dr.

I’m leaving my UR there as a reminder to myself and other editors to occasionally check progress.

I have not yet tried to dig up online documentation about completion date.

I-75:

In Wayne County, southbound I-75 ramp to southbound M-10 will be closed from 9:00 a.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Thursday, 7/31/14 for bridge repair.

Thanks for the explanation and suggestion. Instead of making permanent changes (e.g. adding the “(Construction Zone)” tag), I added the time-based turn restrictions for a defined date range (through early September). Hopefully those will help avoid the worst crush of traffic during rush hours.

Thanks again,
SDM

I placed a time-based restriction on the segment running over the river. (Permalink)
