Naming Areas of Dubai

Just wondering whats the best way to label different neighborhoods/suburbs

For example Marina, JLT, Tecom, Barsha, Karam, Deira etc…

From other country forums and current map, I’ve found 3 methods.

Tecom
Tecom, Dubai
Tecom (Dubai)
Dubai

Currently I’m finding some areas are not consistent and therefore show more than one method. I think we should agree to one and standardize it . Any thoughts?

I think its good to include the area, especially for wazers not familiar with Dubai or someone who has been gone for 2 weeks during which a new area was built

I think method 1 will be the neatest due to less characters, but i’m not sure if there will be any technical issues by not including dubai

Now that you mention TECOM, that area is actually Al Thaniya [sp?] 1, Discovery Gardens is Al Thaniya 5.

whatever thing that you add shouldn’t have the city in it unless it is only the city. Waze is adding “states” to the international server and in countries where the city tab was named as “district, city” would have to be modified to “district” only. That said, and in order to help you, you should just add “district” in the tab city. Highways (minor, major, freeway) dont have anything in the city tab because such roads go out of the city boundaries, so when the city polygon gets recorded in the server, it tends to extend the “city” limit too much.

nice, that makes sense to have district and state fields

Regarding Al Thaniya 1 and Al Thaniya 5, I have never heard anybody refer to these as such. To confuse matters even more, Tecom is listed on dubai government tourism site (http://map.dubaitourism.ae/applet/map_js.html) as Dubai Media City Extension :?

Where did you find Al Thaniya names?

We could always just use the alternate names feature

Those names are on the white signboards when you enter the area.

Checked last night, and the correct spelling of the TECOM area’s name is Al Thanyah 1.

Just a small thing to mention, when naming a street that runs through multiple suburbs you can leave the tickbox in City set to “none”.

Good catch! I’ve looked into this and found this list from Dubai Land Department which shows old names vs. new names for local communities.

Apparently Al Thanyah 1 used to be called Al Sufouh 3. I wonder if it was ever officialy Tecom…

Worst part of it is that by the time we understand where Al Hebiah the First is, it will probably be changed again

I’m still confused about this subject and think we should come up with a clear standard, as we have so many different methods showcased on the map

So far, I’ve noticed the below methods being used.(Even i have been switching between them)

  1. Area, Emirate
  2. Area (Emirate)
  3. Area
    4 Emirate
  4. Emirate, Emirate in Arabic
  5. Emirate and highlight area as a landmark (other) and name it accordingly
  6. a number of other variations of the above with different spaces, or translations

All of these methods make sense, however I’m sure technically some are better than others. For example, in navigation, will method 4 or 6 work? etc…

And then theres the issue of official names vs. actual used names like “Al Thanyah 1” vs. “Tecom”.

Perhaps a simple solution to this would be to use the Alternate Names option, so for example we use Dubai as a standard default city, and add Tecom as one alternate to that area and Al Thanyah 1 as another alternate. and then other alternates in Arabic. That currently can be done but only if there is a street name. It doesn’t allow alternate names to City alone if Street is unnamed. I don’t know how that would work with navigation though

Any thoughts on this?
