Forgive me if I have missed it but I am finding examples of SR-xxxx and NM-xxxx for naming standards in the wiki, and have not been able to find this subject in the forum or HO.
The To-Do List has NM-xxxx, but the wiki page uses many examples of SR-xxxx.
Has it been decided or do we open the discussion now?
I can adjust the wiki page when the decision is made.
I am pretty sure it still is SR-XXX, unless something has changed recently?
Colorado uses SH-XXX.
I am okay with SR-XXX, just want to get the wiki updated so visitors like me will not change things unknowingly ![]()
Hi, I know this is a super old thread but I did want to revive discussion.
Right now, I am okay with using SR-XX but the official New Mexico Department of Transportation practice is to just refer to them as NM-XX. That’s how they are designated on nearly all text signs like mileage signs without shields and street names on stop signs/traffic signals.
In only a few cases are the roads referred to as “State Road XX”. That’s usually for roads with values/digits under 10. For example, in White Rock, some street signs say “State Road 4” instead of “New Mexico 4”.
If there was ever a move to do a statewide renaming, then I’d support renaming to “New Mexico XX”.
For now, if we can just use the state route shield in Waze navigation more often than displaying “SR-XX”, I’d be happier.
Thanks,
Jacob (TrafficStatMan)
There is no single source for county data. There are some county resources available at https://www.waze.com//wiki/USA/New_Mexico#City_.2F_County_Resources and we continue to add links to more counties as we discover them.
As for alt names, even if the route numbers are no longer used and/or unsigned it won’t hurt to use them as alt names. The alt names don’t appear in the app but they are searchable.
The naming convention issue would have to be discussed at the Regional Coordinator level. The current naming convention was determined many years ago. Changing it at this point would have major technical ramifications.
Sorry for the late reply but I would like to start that conversation regarding naming convention with the Regional Coordinator(s). Namely due to the fact almost no one in New Mexico refers to the roads as “state routes” – not colloquially, not officially.
As a compromise, we could change the full name in the text to speech to “State Road”. The abbreviation could still be SR.
Just in New Mexico we never refer to state highways as state routes. We call them either state highways, state roads, or just “New Mexico xx”. The major exception is route numbers less than 10. Those we usually call, for example, “state road 4” as opposed to just “New Mexico 4”.
TrafficStatMan, thanks for your input! The original reason for Waze adopting SR instead of NM seems to be lost to history, and in hindsight I think everyone agrees it should have been different. There has been some recent discussion about how such a change might be efficiently made.
