Naming of US-3/ Henri A Burque Hwy in

A UR brought up the naming of a section of US-3 in Nashua, locally named the Henri A Burque Hwy. The Henri A Burque Hwy is the stretch of US-3 that runs between Amherst St and Concord St in Nashua

Currently in waze the primary name is Henri A Burque Hwy and the alternate name is US-3.

The UR stated that the user “saw no street signs with the Henri A Burque Hwy name.” I think the alternate and primary names of the stretch of highway should be switched.

The National waze wiki on Road Names, currently provides the following guidance about US Highways passing through cities and towns:

If the goal is to be consistent with signage the US-3 name should be the primary name. Currently BGS are present heading both North and South on Amherst and Concord Streets identifying the stretch of road as US-3. Additionally, the BGS on the Everett Turnpike Exit 7E(heading north and south), identify the road as solely US-3.

There are two little street signs on the traffic light poles that identify the stretch of road as the Henri A Burque Hwy. However, these signs are smaller than the US-3 signs and the signs are likely not noticeable to anyone taking the AGC from Amherst St heading north to US-3 or the AGC from Concord St. heading South to US-3, or the ramp from northbound exit 7E. Therefore, only people coming from 2 of the possible 5 directions are likely to see these smaller Henri A Burque Hwy Signs. Accordingly, I believe US-3 should be the primary name, with Henri A Burque Hwy as the alternate name.

I would agree with this for this instance. The times I’ve driven that road, I don’t think I ever actually saw the LGS with Henry A Burque Hwy, but I saw the BGS for US-3. In other locations where the LGS or other signage is more visible, I think the local name should be the primary and the route number the alt.

Great post, Derrydrivin!

You’ve made a great case for renaming the HBH as “US-3”, with “Henry Burque Hwy” as the alt name.

Changes have been made.
