On a long trip I had recently, my battery power was being drained faster than charging while connected to a car charger. I had Waze, a few other background services (IM etc), and brightness set to max. I actually have the Power Manager app to change configuration depending if I’m on battery or on external. Please look into ways where you can reduce the power consumption.
A separate feature but related to the power issue. Can we have a third mode for display? I know we have 2D and 3D view, but they consume a lot of energy to render. Also most of the time we do not need those modes, since we are driving in common daily commutes. A status/monitor view would be great. It should have buttons on the screen for reports, events, etc. Also a configurable setting to see nearby incidents, speed, direction, approaching street, etc.
Hi
Thanks for the input.
The power issue is interesting and we’ll need to investigate it further.
Regarding the display, likewise, we’ll see what can be done about this suggestion.

I had the same problem with power consumption. My iPhone was charging via a car charger the entire trip, but the battery went from 100% to 20% over this 5 hour drive. I have noticed this before while using data-heaving apps that the battery will decrease even though the phone is charging, but this seemed like an unusually fast drop in battery while charging.
You might want to invest in a better charger. I had a charger that did nothing but slow down the loss of battery power when running waze, so I bought another one which does the trick quite nicely.
Cheapo Malaysian eBay chargers may seem like a good idea, but they’re not always just inexpensive. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.
Similar to sketch and max, I use waze on long trips with the charger plugged in and it will actually charge up a somewhat depleted battery and then keep it full for the rest of the trip.
I’ve made 6 plus hour trips with my phone on the car charger and the battery has stayed fully charged with only waze open. The only other application that i have noticed that drains power more quickly than charging is Skyfire browser. Will have to run both on my next long trip.
I do agree with a number of users who have witnessed a high level of power usage when running Waze on both a Nokia E90 and E51. At least my phone do charge when connected to the car charger. Perhaps the number of connections to the database could be limited and have larger but more infrequent updates and downloads. Obviously the GPS will already by adding to the battery usage as it needs to remain on continuously.
If you are having power issues while charging, here is something for you to check.
I just replaced my car charger and started to experience these battery problems. The problem is actually a" feature" of the charger. The little documented anti- overcharge circuitry would switch the charger into a standby mode if the battery charge reached full. Being in standby results in the battery draining as fast or faster than normal because only a minimal maintenance charge is reaching the phone. This is especially true if the phone is configured to change to a high consumption mode when plugged in. Reconnecting the charger restarts the charge mode. The chargers are not smart enough exit the maintenance mode and resume standard charging.
It seems that this anti- overcharge technology is becoming popular for pda’s, cellphones, and other smart devices. Hope this helps someone.
In my case maybe not that much(95->65% in 2hrs), but my phone keeps warning me every 10-15 minutes the the charging power is not sufficient in relation to the powerconsumption, hence my battery is draining while charging
