"Orientation on First Login" doesn't follow smart positioning

Is this a…:
Standard bug
Steps to reproduce this issue:
Hi Team,

As per this post:

When I open waze.com/editor incognito, I can see that the map defaults to London in the background. When I log in, it takes me to “Default location per environment” as per the above list.

I am not asked for my current location, and no permission request is received.

My home is set, but Waze does not position the map here.

I’ve driven with the Waze app, but my area of last drive is not used either.

Was this feature just never rolled out? I can’t tell. If this never left beta, happy for it to be moved back to beta bugs and marked WAD.

Environment where the bug occurs…:
ROW

Browser name and version:
Chrome 144.0.7559.61
Are you using scripts? Please detail which ones.:

Always, when Waze forgets/doesn’t have stored your last opened WME location, welcome to London. Must be very disorienting especially for new editors, luckily I have scripts or know that since you’re in the wrong country to make sure you specify country or at least state when using the search bar.

Hi @LostInMyMaps,

Thank you for your input!
I’ve checked whether the Smart Positioning feature works as described in the linked post. For this purpose specifically, I used a brand new Waze account with their home and work locations saved in the app. Upon my first WME login, I was placed exactly where my home location is set in the app. As such, I’m happy to confirm that the feature is working as designed.

As for the Incognito flow - this would be WAD as well as this is not the first login for your account and the system (not the browser) is aware of that.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

All the best,
Olesya

Thanks for the prompt response @Olesya-Staff. Could we get some insight into why devs thought it was beneficial for the first login and not any subsequent?

Say for instance I’m a new editor, log in on my mobile, get taken straight to my house but realise this is very difficult on mobile, log in on my computer and get placed somewhere randomly - from the new user’s POV - on the map since I exhausted my only chance.

I feel that it would’ve taken more effort to do this on first login than every login, provided again, there is no stored cookie of previous editing location.

Since we’re on this topic, just to float another idea past. I think it would be really good if we could implement just before the default location, using the user’s IP address to identify their location at minimum to a country level.

That is so incredibly disappointing to hear. What massive opportunity lost to improve the experience for every login for every user. I’m so demotivated to hear this

Hi @brandon28au @LostInMyMaps,

Thank you for your feedback.
I understand your point and indeed this flow might not be ideal for new users on their subsequent log-ons.
I’d appreciate it if you could raise a suggestion so I can open a feature request based on that.

Best regards,
Olesya
