[Page Update] Cameras

With the new locking mechanism, some new guidance is required for cameras. The champs have supported the guidance included in the changes linked below. The changes (and the existing page) are open for changes, so take this opportunity to recommend any wordsmithing or to remove any outdated info.

The gist of the new guidance is that cameras should be locked to match the associated segment, with a minimum lock of r2.

Would it be worth noting that existing cameras locked above shouldn’t be unlocked just for the sake of this updated guideline, unless the camera needs to be edited. Otherwise we could see an influx of unlock Requests like we do occasionally with newer editors finding segments at old locking standard but don’t need to be otherwise edited.

Sounds good to me.

I would recommend a slight change in the wording to indicate these are minimum lock levels, similar to the way that the road locks are minimum standard locks.

I agree it’ll reduce any confusion for newer editors as well.

New mbox added to the lock section:

{{mbox | type = protection | text = The lock levels above are minimums, meaning that cameras may have higher locks. Additionally, there is no need to make a campaign of lowering all camera locks; rather, lowering of camera lock levels should primarily be done when needed to resolve another issue with the camera. }}

Added a blurb about the 1/2 mile threshold for speed camera alerts. Let me know if you can think of a better way to word it. Going to push the draft to the wiki soon.

While a Red Light Camera will always give an alert in the client as a driver approaches, a Speed Camera will always show a pop-up alert, but will only generate an audible alert if the driver is ‘’‘exceeding’‘’ the set Speed Limit as the vehicle crosses an invisible threshold one-half (1/2) mile from the camera’s location. A situation can arise where a camera placed precisely one half mile from an intersection requiring vehicle to slow or stop will not be announced, because the vehicle is traveling at less than the speed limit. In cases like this, editors should consider setting the max speed speed to 0 to alert all drivers approaching the camera, no matter their speed.

Looks good. I wouldn’t capitalize speed limit and probably not speed camera or red light camera, but the wording makes perfect sense.

I would think that Red Light Camera and Speed Camera because they are referring to the camera type in WME not the camera on the actual road.
You would set the camera type to Red Light Camera if there is a red light camera on the road.

I agree that speed limit in the context used would be lower case.

Not sure if I should have posted it here or just created a new thread, but I have added a new speed camera example for the type of cameras being deployed around NY (and other states according to the manufacturer’s website).https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Cameras#Speed_examples
