[Page Update] Lanes (continue straight feature)

Greetings, Wazers!

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Lanes

Time being of the essence, the US Champs and I did not delay on updating and releasing a first draft of guidance for the new lanes continue straight override feature.

For details, please see the diff.

I have made the following changes:

  • modified the 2nd and 3rd “important considerations” in the heading with new information;
  • added the “When to use the lanes continue straight override” guidance section;
  • added the “Adding a lanes continue straight override” interface section; and
  • modified the section “Mapping lanes on divided roadways” to point out that lanes continue straight works with heuristics but needs to be on the entry segment, not the median segment.

For what it’s worth, I tend to favor “Lanes CS” as the shorthand name for this.

As for the substantive guidance itself on the Lanes CS feature, it is generally as follows:

  • “View and hear” works the same as the continue straight TIO, so use it in the same situations. It’s basically a shortcut.
  • “View only” is a new feature to be used in situations that don’t already call for a spoken continue straight instruction, but which benefit from the subtle, silent reminder provided by the “view only” lanes continue straight. The 2 identified scenarios which call for this are (1) dropped travel lanes which don’t meet the standards for a wayfinder, and (2) low-stakes, low-speed situations where a travel lane becomes a turn-only lane.

This post should serve as a notification of changes but also as an invitation for comment.

The “view only”and “view and hear” also display the words continue straight under the LG in the app on at least some platforms. The continue TIO does not display that wording.

Do we need to make it clear that a lane that originates for an exit from an interstate/expressway/highway the on-ramp(s) is not a travel lane For the wiki wording? Yes I realize that the mile reference is in the difference view but Some collector distributors that run multiple exits reach that length for entrances and exit lanes.

Also is it worth discussing having the use for places where there are simultaneous splits to the left and right

Examples:
1.Toll road splits, where there are transponder lanes to the left, cash lanes to the center, and an exit to the right?

  1. Fort Myer Dr split to ramps to turn onto WIlson Dr and tunnel to go under Wilson Dr.

I would tend to think this would be a visual only since most people see the toll booth coming, but can take advantage of the visual only for a backup.

  1. Fort Myer Dr split to ramps to turn onto WIlson Dr and tunnel to go under Wilson Dr.

This would be a see and hear since it is confusing if people aren’t paying attention. (The place that always gets URs is people who need to get left for the left hand turn to eastbound WIlson Blvd, but they skip their keep left instruction there…)

This is not accurate. I believe you and I cleared this up in a separate conversation, but to make it clear to everyone else reading:

The continue TIO and the “view and hear” lanes continue straight look, sound, and operate exactly the same in the app.

Perhaps, do you have an example of one that’s longer than 1 mile?

The view and hear normally does the exact same as the Continue TIO except where I showed the test case in the lanes Discord channel where the words were shown. You stated that was a bug from a previous view only intersection. I have previously reported the bug where it was showing the Words continue straight for the next turn in Centercode.

Will have to look for an example. Think I-95 in Maryland has one.
