There have been a few recent maintenance updates to the routing server page, but the section on route lengths remained untouched. In connection with my proposal for improved language on road type continuity, I’d like to add some information on pruning and XL routes to this page. The current version only mentions streets and says (in other words) that they have a pruning threshold of 10 km. I have debated with myself on whether to keep that number in, but it has been there for 8 years, and it’s a good example of the kind of distances in play with pruning, even if it’s not accurate now. We won’t add any new numbers though. As for XL routing, staff stated that this isn’t confidential, and it’s a great new feature that people should be aware of.
I got some information back from staff (Yigal, specifically), saying that they don’t want pruning thresholds to be published, so I took that out. I removed redundant information, reorganized the sections, took out incorrect stuff about route caching (which doesn’t happen) and generally tried to clean up this page.
Any thoughts?
Some random observations:
In the section titled Routing Requests, sixth bullet: “avoid avoid”
In the section Average road speeds, first line of first paragraph: “…then the route may not be optimal…”
This is my first time commenting on a proposed change, and I may not yet understand the process. If so I apologize
I did not consider what parts of the article are new and what are old, I just read it through as a stand-alone document. I found it very helpful in understanding how the routing server works.
Thanks! I made your suggested changes.
I have published the changes.
I made a slight wording change in the section about pruning, in response to comments on Discord. Hopefully it’s clearer that we don’t have evidence of the pruning of major highways, but we know that freeways and ramps are never pruned.
