Hi all,
I’ve been editing off and on for a year or so which makes me a relative newbie I imagine.
However, I have a question. It would appear that a number of parking lot roads that I tidied up in Keene, NH have been deleted. I believe that I conformed to the best practice of the major segments of the parking lot roads rather than making a nest out of them and some are fairly busy, even leading into street lights and that sort of thing (see the Hannaford’s parking lot near the intersection of West St. and Rt 12 in Keene as an example).
I don’t want to re-add these roads if there’s a local convention that I violated by fixing them however it seems that at least the major access parts of those parking lots should be mapped.
Thanks and best regards,
Dan
It sounds like you did things correctly.
If you want to provide a permalink, I’d be happy to provide specific feedback.
Thanks for the reply. The area that I was talking about is here:
https://www.waze.com/livemap?zoom=17&lat=42.93365&lon=-72.29344
That link is roughly centered on West St. between the Hannaford’s plaza to the north and the Kohl’s plaza across the street to the south. Both are relatively busy parking lots and it seems that at least the major bits should be mapped.
Similar issue at nearby Wheelock park. There are access roads in the park (some seasonal). These lead to often visited baseball fields as well as a school parking lot, all are gone now:
https://www.waze.com/livemap?lon=-72.30242&lat=42.94177&zoom=17
There are a handful of other areas that I worked on a bit last year that appear to have been purposefully stripped of the parking lot roads so I figured I should check in before doing the work again. And please don’t take this as a complaint about the deletion, just trying to tread lightly before re-establishing the roads.
Thanks,
Dan
The Hanniford lot could definately have some parking lot roads and comply with the PLR convention. However, I think that the access roads for the park might be a bit questionable (because they wouldn’t aid navigation). I wouldn’t add them.
That said, I wouldn’t have deleted them, either, if I came across them in my mapping.
I occasionally have some roads deleted on me, too. I don’t know what people are thinking, but don’t assume that the person deleting them knows something you don’t. Asking questions like this is always good.
One more thing… when sending a permalink, please do so from the editor, not the live map, following the instructions here: permalink
Okay, if I get a minute I’ll see about putting the roads back in the busier parking lots.
Related question, what’s the consensus on mapping the part of the parking lot that goes around behind the building? This is the kind of thing that is generally used for truck deliveries and/or employee parking. It’s clearly accessible with a vehicle but probably only limited navigational use for the general public.
Also, would you explain why you think the roads in Wheelock Park would be questionable? Functionally it seems that they are parking lot roads since they lead to parking areas inside the park that service the various fields and playgrounds there. Some parts are closed during the winter but they’re definitely for vehicle traffic during the warmer months. The entry road is also the only access to the parking lot at the school adjacent to the park. That might not have been clear from the aerial view or it might certainly be a misunderstanding on my side.
And thanks for the heads up on the permalink convention. Is this more the thing?
Note that in the map linked above the only access to the parking lot at the school is from the access road inside Wheelock park. Wheelock St coming up from the south is gated.
And as luck would have it the street that the parking lots connect to has a level 3 lock on it (I’m level 2 so that’s blocking me).
Is it standard for a moderate street like that to be locked at that level or would that indicate that there might have been something going on in the past that caused it to be locked to prevent further messing about?
Thanks again and sorry for the excessive chatter,
Dan
Regarding the roads behind buildings, there is no official guidance. But the senior editors with whom I’ve worked, the consensus is to not map them. Your wording explains why: “limited navigational use for the general public.” An exception to this would be when there is an actual entrance to a strip mall behind the stores that is for the general public to use (here is a moderately good example).
Now that you’ve pointed out the access road to me, I’m more inclined to map the roads there (probably all as parking lot roads). I was trying to balance the work involved to create them, map clarity, and how much it would really help navigation (since it appears there is only one way in/out). Even with my earlier thinking-- it wasn’t really incorrect; I was just less enthused about it. Others would have seen it differently.
Even with the many rules we have for mapping, one can present an issue to many editors and get several points of view on how to best approach that issue.
Additionally to aid navigation, you should move the stop point of the park, optimally on the access road close to the park entrance.
And your permalink was done correctly this time. Keep in mind that permalinks retain whatever layers you have turned on at the time you create them (so you may want to turn some on or off to clarify the point you are making).

Hi, Dan.
That’s currently classified as a “Primary Street”, and the state standard for that is to lock that to L2. And you are correct–sometimes segments are locked higher when there is something going on to justify it. But I don’t see anything there that would cause that (not that there might isn’t something non-obvious).
Please read the NH wiki page to learn more about that.
I’d help you directly, but that’s out of my editing area. You can create a post in the US Unlock and Update forum to get that lowered to the state standard.
Have you joined the Google Hangout for NH editors? That is a faster way to get things unlocked (usually).
I’m happy to help.

Thanks on all fronts. I’ll fiddle a bit with Wheelock and try to get that straightened back out. Will also look more closely at the wiki and see what I can do on the unlock forum. Busy times
Thanks again for your help,
Dan
