Part-time speed limits near schools

Hi,

I’m currently looking into a UR regarding what appears to be a speed limit near a school that is only part time. My research suggests that normally the road is 30mph, but when the school is opening or closing, it drops to 20mph.

The simple question is, how should this be mapped on Waze? A blanket 20mph is clearly the safest option, but that may generate URs at all other times when the school is closed - the complete opposite of what is currently happening! It’s a bit of a catch 22!

Has anyone encountered this before, or does anyone have any thoughts? Many thanks.

Cheers!

Dave

Personally I would set it at the ‘normal’ 30 mph limit. The 20 mph is only a temporary limit for a couple of hours at the start & end of the school day.

Until we are able to set time restricted speed changes I would set to the limit that is in force for the majority of the time. Remember it is up to the person in control of the vehicle to use the information in provided out of the large glass viewing port, the App is only a driving aid, not the rule book.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. That definitely makes a lot of sense, I’m still awaiting feedback from the reporter, but I’ll leave the road as-is.

Good point about the app only being an aid and not a definitive driving guide. I’ve seen URs before where people have complained that the app isn’t telling them to give way at junctions! I suppose this is also why so many people jump red traffic lights - “the app didn’t tell me to stop”!

Cheers,

Dave

I agree with Chris, the speed limit in Waze should be set to 30mph being the maximum on the street at any time.

This is similar to variable limits on ‘smart’ motorways which we would set to 70mph as the maximum outside of peak traffic times. Even if we could add limits for certain times here, you’d then have to worry about term dates as these types of limits don’t usually apply during school holidays.

Andrew
