Phoenix AZ Freeway naming is a disaster!

Just spent a week in the Phoenix area cruising the old homestead and visiting family, and I noticed that the map is a mess all over town. The biggest issues are all the unnamed freeway off-ramps which pick up the oh-so-informative name of “<whatever> Freeway Access Road”, along with hundreds of ramp-like turn lanes at intersections which have been helpfully named after the road they are departing (Waze ends up constantly telling you to stay left or right on the street you are driving as you pass streets, and make turns.) Most of them don’t seem long enough to be a separate route, and would probably be better off deleted.

Someone with permissions for the freeways there needs to, unfortunately, slog through the process of renaming all the off-ramps with their exit signage, and at the very least remove names from separated turn lanes so they’ll pick up the lane of the destination street instead of carrying the name of the street they are leading off of.

If you drove through there with Waze running, you already have the rights to rename and fix problems which aren’t locked. Why don’t you go give it a try? See the Map Editing link in my sig to get familiar with the editor. Have fun!

Yep, Phoenix is another large US city where the Waze map needs substantial work. I was there in November 2011 and did a bit of editing around that time. But I am only one person, it’s not my home city, etc. I mostly focused on the following issues at the time:

  • Detailed editing in the specific parts of Phoenix that I visited
  • Correcting a bunch of badly mapped freeway interchanges (the many diverging diamond, or similar interchanges that were totally hosed up) without dealing with the ramp names to at least get the geometry and turn restrictions corrected
  • Corrected every Papyrus map problem for all of Phoenix at that time
  • Removed a bunch of aqueduct roads and similar that were not valid for driving

Likely at lot of the turning lane ramps were added by the IGN crew last year. Doesn’t seem that there are many enthusiastic editors in Phoenix.

I’m AM there in the East Valley and working on it. I have edit permissions for most of the highway area, but only unlock for the east valley. And yes, alot of it was edited bad and locked by an AM that doesn’t really seem active at all anymore.
Where I can I fixed the naming on some off ramps, also re-alligned ramps to where the really run and also allowed turns that should be allowed. For instance I was just trying to do one where the ramp runs about 1500 feet shorter than the actual ramp itself, tried to save and BAM no permission because someone has it locked and did a bad job creating it.
I think I’m gonna have to request AM of a larger area to clean some of it up.

Oh yes, gettingthere, whomever mapped the aquaducts needed to be shot. Also someone has been going around making POI’s out of every freaking parking lot!
I’m at around 20,000 edits, So there is atleast ONE enthusiatic editor out here!

I believe that most of the aquaducts came in with the base map import.

Glad to hear you are working on it! Waze on!

I may have locked some of the unnamed freeway ramps on the interchanges that I worked on. If you need them unlocked, send me a PM with the relevant permalink.

Every ramp I checked was locked for me, and from an earlier post, it seems even the local AM there doesn’t have unlock permissions on many of them. I’ll check more thoroughly, though, and lend a hand where I can. Sadly, the Waze servers don’t seem to like me today, so I can’t do it right now.

Glad to see there are other Waze users working on the Phoenix area. I too have noticed many of the problems described in this thread. I’m currently working on cleaning up the far west valley (Goodyear, Avondale, Litchfield Park, Buckeye, and bits of Surprise/Peoria). There is a lot of work that needs to be done. Up to 7000+ edits so far!

I’v’e noticed a few of the exits on the 101 near Tempe are off when I was driving around, I think they were named incorrectly?

I’ve been using Waze for a while but only started reading up and messing around with the map editor, I even tried to edit a road I paved in Gilbert when I was visiting a friend earlier this month so it would show up in the client, but I’m not having any luck. :frowning:

Also sorta OT, but I tired to report red light camera when I was driving in Chandler this week and it didn’t post it but said an area manager had to verify and add it? How do we contact the AM to do that? These are where the cameras are located: http://www.chandleraz.gov/default.aspx?pageid=59

Since it was my old romping grounds, I had edited over in that valley a few times, mainly for the horrible freeways as well, I never touched the ramps. If need help down there, I’ll certainly help out, solicited or unsolicited
