Hi all,
It seems there’s been some confusion with regards to photo traffic enforcement (i.e. red light cameras and photo radar).
I’ll link the other discussions in here shortly, but wanted to get things rolling on a BC-specific basis.
First off, there is no photo radar in BC. Furthermore, there have never been any fixed speed cameras in BC – they’ve all been mobile. As such, there should not be any speed cameras approved in the province… mobile photo radar should be reported as “Police (hidden)” though many client users don’t realise that.
As for red light cameras, we currently have one person inquiring of ICBC whether the cameras capture multiple directions or just one – once we have some clarity on that, we can proceed to develop an applicable policy.
FYI, Wiki page on Cameras. We can make a page unique to Canada if there is anything wildly different.
ICBC has confirmed the following:
- red light cameras only capture traffic travelling in ONE direction
- only one red light camera will ever exist at an intersection
Additionally, from looking at StreetView, I can confirm that occasionally red light cameras will move at an intersection (one StreetView angle had the camera in one place in 2011, and a different angle had it in a different place in 2012, at the same intersection).
Another reminder: the camera must be positioned on the stop line, pointing in the direction of traffic. That is to say, the camera icon must be on the stop line that traffic should stop at (otherwise risk a ticket), and the red dot should be in the intersection that they’re stopped before.
I’m currently working on cleaning up the cameras in the Lower Mainland – I’ve got most of them done now, and should be complete by the end of the day. This is referencing the map here: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=110832641771124554739.000494510b0891a4641f2&mid=1291843261 and StreetView to see the direction being observed.
There’s one at main and marine in Vancouver, catching WB Marine, or at least the strobes went off when we went though the other day.
Yup, noticed your report, verified on StreetView and approved it.
Thanks!
