I’ve been using Waze for years mainly for the speed cameras, red light cameras, police reports and that sort of thing. The chattiness settings (Normal, Less chatty, Alerts only, Off) are helpful, but they’re still a bit blunt.
On Normal it nags me about cars on the hard shoulder and keeps giving full turn-by-turn instructions, which I don’t need. On Alerts only it goes quiet about upcoming speed cameras – it only speaks up once you’re already over the limit, which rather defeats the point. I’d much rather get a bit of warning so I can slow down in time.
What would be really useful is a proper list of toggles so we can pick and choose. Something like:
• Speed cameras (including how far away they are)
• Red light cameras
• Police reported ahead
• Emergency vehicles
• Vehicles on the hard shoulder / other hazards
• Turn-by-turn directions
• Speeding warnings
That way people who just want the safety alerts can switch off the rest and not get distracted by constant “in 200 yards turn left” announcements.
I reckon a lot of drivers would appreciate being able to set it up exactly how they want it.
