Question in Dover - SR-108/SR-9/Central Ave/Main St

Copied from my wall of text in Discord

Question in Dover… We switch from SR-108 being the primary name to Central Ave at one point with SR-108 and SR-9 as alt names… but there are also segments where SR-9 is not added as an alt name that it should be. Here’s a PL for the entire thing, but I’ll also post PLs breaking it down: all relevant segments

In my mind there should be consistency for the above segments

In downdown it is a bit different because Main St and Central ave are two one way streets in opposite directions, both of which carry SR-108 and SR-9. But Main St is listed as primary, and SR-108 is primary on Central Ave
https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=usa&lon=-70.87291&lat=43.19663&zoom=6

But Central Ave does not have SR-9 as an alt name here, and has a primary name of SR-108. Main St however is set as its primary name with SR-108 and SR-9 as alts - as well as SR4 for the portion where it exists.

At this segment Main St ends and we go back to Central Ave, but SR-108 is the primary name, and SR-9 is not an alt name from here north: https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=usa&lon=-70.87377&lat=43.19886&zoom=7&segments=63500331

Until we get to this segment, at which time we switch to Central Ave as the primary with SR-108 and SR-9 as alt names: https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=usa&lon=-70.87453&lat=43.20408&zoom=7&segments=86280965

This continues to the junction with Indian Brook Rd, at which point Central Ave ends and becomes Rochester Rd heading north (primary name SR-108), and Indian Brook Rd picks up SR-9 https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=usa&lon=-70.88669&lat=43.22145&zoom=6&segments=88284912

This is a really good question that doesn’t have a quick answer

One of the first things we like to do is look at what the roads are signed as or know as.
The sign is typically the primary name since it matches what one would hear as they make the turn.

Alt names and house numbers work fine so the order doesn’t impact how one would find an address.

Another consideration is there had been rumors that Waze would match State Route sigh shields to display on the map similar to how US- and I- work currently but that is “soon”

But I always lean towards machig the signs

A recent discussion in Maine also discusses some of this.

Great topic btw.

I think the roads are signed with the local street name, but there are also signs for the route numbers. All the businesses use the local name (I just finished going through them, with the exception of Central Ave north of Oak St - that’s where I’m at right now), and most people I know, know those streets better by the local name than the route number. For example I didn’t realize that entire stretch is also SR-9.
edit I should say, that I knew they were SR-9 on some level, but it wasn’t really part of my thinking of those roads.

I lean towards urban/residential areas as local names and outside of that SR names

Based off your discord post regarding these segmwnts we should verify that these SR are correct.

What is the best resources for that?

Best resources are GRANITview: https://granitview.unh.edu/html5viewer/index.html?viewer=granit_view

and the 2018 NH DOT book map for Dover: ftp://pubftp.nh.gov/DOT/Planning%20and%20Community%20Assistance/Road%20Data/2018_BOOK_NodalMaps/DOVER_bookmap.pdf

Relevant pages in the bookmap are 15, 21 and 22

That’s my feeling as well, for the segments in question (not the Indian Brook Rd ones), I’d say that those should all be the local names as primary with all appropriate SR as alternates.

I’m all for consistency. All towns in NH use street names for addressing unless there is no street name and/or they default to Route 120 or some version thereof. If Waze uses the Primary street names for routing then it seems wise to not have the street name. I realize there might be a balance between TTS and routing but on routes that have signed street with named segments (other than SRs) then it seems that we likely should use those unless there’s a good reason not to.

My thoughts, and as usual, local leadership trumps all of the following if different.
Usually the primary street name is what matches the GIS, with the Little Green Street Signs overriding that if different. WIth all the various alt names not sure why not there but they can be added for consistency where appropriate (and to cure any OCD). Unless someone uses that missing SR-# for addresses there isn’t too much benefit to the users.
For routing, if the SR-9 or SR-108 is primary name and then the road switches to a proper local town road name (ex Main St), as long as the next segment has at least one alt name that matched the prior SR-9 or SR-108 primary it should not have an adverse affect on the routing. Basically follows the BDP rules.
