Recently I discovered that there are two “pool” categories
Shopping/Services -> Swimming Pool
Outdoors -> Pool
These appear to be very similar, and a quick inquiry didnt give much further insight. While the utilization of the either might result in the same desired outcome, I do not know if the community wants to provide further guidance. Further recognizing that may such pools/swimming pools category combinations likely already be exist.
My questions:
-Does it matter, both now and future implications?
-Should one be used over the other, and if so what are the criteria?
-Should both be used?
I actually was completely serious when I answered your inquiry in Discord. A pool refers to a small, natural body of water, often associated with the ocean. A swimming pool is a man-made structure that is maintained with chemicals to promote safe swimming.
Thank you, yes I recognized the sincerity of your reply. Especially when thinking of the other categories within that parent “Outdoors” grouping it is more apparent that the intended usage would be a natural feature than recreational swimming pool.
However there were those who indicated they use both, so I felt it would be of value to broaden the discussion for others.
The challenge, I have was in typing “pool” to the category both options came up divorce of their parent categories. Not fully versed in all the nuances, or even much of the non subtly due to me new nature it is very easy to select the first option I saw which was pool.
In looking at the Places Area vs Point table there was little to be gleaned on the difference unless one analyzed the parent category for possible intent. I do find the overall categories sometimes lacking in options to appropriately capture the nature of the business but I also realize that those who are using waze are not looking for the Yelp review and should have a desired swimming pool in mind
Yes, we have never had enough categories, and we have always had categories that don’t really have a use here or even globally. I think Pool is actually useless, maybe everywhere. If you want to map a body of water, use Sea/Lake/Pond on an area place, but only if the existing water layer is inadequate. If you want to map a manmade swimming pool with chlorinated or brominated water, as Eric said, use Swimming Pool on a point place.
This has long been a new editor training issue. I suppose they pick “Pool” instead of “Swimming Pool” because “Pool” the first-listed option when typing “Pool”.
