Road Junctions

There are many junctions around the Dubai area which needs some cleaning out to improve voice guidance. Here is an excerpt from the Junction Style Guide explaining how voice prompts are calculated:

i dont know man, my gut tells me its the voice guidance that needs to get smarter, not the roads that need to change.

This I spotted yesterday, and seems to be a new edit.

There is no need for this amount of segments and serves no benefit.

I worked on this street so hard today. Please check the junction one more time. Which I put junctions, looks so simple and not enough on the map however Waze Navigator works excellent.

i should edit a “couple” of my junctions now…
too bad i read this after edit.
rookie error :o

Good to hear that you take notice of the junction rules.
Besides the https://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Junction_Style_Guide, please also read the General Editing Rules of the UAE, before editing.
You can find them here on the forum https://www.waze.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=938 and it will also lead you to the WIKI pages applicable.

If you have any specific questions, don’t hesitate to ask on the forum, or contact one of the country managers via PM.

Thanks for helping improve the UAE

sure, i will do that.

Still finding stuff like this on the maps, and they aren’t event that old. Clearly some people are editing maps without reading the forums.

You can send the editor a PM, with bazgrant and me in the copy. Or send us the username, and we’ll inform him about best editing practices. We can help un-knowing editors to learn  and point them in the right direction.

It seems that the issue with cluttered junctions are spreading everywhere over the maps. Roads that was fine are now a jumble of lines everywhere making a mess of directions. For example, driving on Yas Island now along Leisure Drive you constantly receive “keep left” and “keep right” prompts. Quite often I see instructions to instead of turning right Waze has some strange loops as per the screenshot.(unavailable attachment: Screenshot_2015-04-06-16-42-09.png). There was a tweet by @WazeMapping that slipways should not be drawn, and the same is in the Wiki stating that it should only be drawn if the lane is separated before a voice prompt would occur, but at 1 kilometer there is a prompt so it should not be required in 99.999% of cases.

Another thing, as per this tweet https://twitter.com/WazeMapping/status/589473470464954368 U-Turns are now supported:

That loop can be prevented by making the centre segments shorter then 15m without street names. The mapcat bowtie youve been creating is not meant for that. That is to prevent uturn so that’s useless and waste of editing effort.
Better make all the simple exiting roads 90 degrees to prevent the constant keep lefts you talk about.

I did most of the edits on Yas Island, the issue with all of the "keep left"and “keep right” prompts is mostly because this place tends not to give certain roads names. I have now named Yas Leisure Drive and it should solve the issue. I’ve noticed this in other places too and it, again, is where they have decided not give roads names. :frowning:

This is an American twitter account and has nothing to do with Waze in the UAE. :!:

There should be no issue with slip roads, if they are mapped correctly. The false turn and keep prompts have to do with a combination of (not) naming the streets, and the Y-shaped connections you mentioned a few posts before this.
If all connections are 90 degrees, with help of a geo-node for parallel roads, or just straight, when it’s a perpendicular road, there should only be a turn right, for the exit.

A nice tool to check the effect of the edits is the Junction Angle Info script, which is updated with colours that estimate the instruction you will get.

Having taken a break from Waze for some time and now trying it again, it seems that the issue with junctions have been spreading and now comes with level 4&5 locks. There are numerous routes I use regularly where Waze presents me with a 10Km route around an intersection that IF Waze would go straight through would give me a 2Km route at half the time. Here is the Wiki bit regarding junctions: https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Bowtie#Box_and_partial_box_intersections

This issue of intersections not functioning causes the Waze app not to provide alternative routes which negates the whole raison d’être of Waze.

Slip roads are still being drawn which is either A) causing Waze to give “keep left” and “keep right” instructions where it is not needed, or B) simply no guidance whatsoever. Page from Wiki: https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/At-grade_connectors#Should_the_connector_be_mapped.3F

Can you show me examples of the 2 issues you mention?

Both these pages are designed by/for US mapping, in a country with an active editing community. The community in the UAE is very different. I’ve tried KISSing in the beginning, but the result is, everybody keeps adding all kinds of at grade connectors, separate lanes, etc. So the map will be cluttered with non-functioning red roads.

Bowties are designed to restrict uturns in the first place. We need those in the UAE. And on top of that, the UAE intersecions are too large to have bowties without MP popping up.

If a slip road or at grade connector is properly mapped at 90 degr, there will be no issue with the mentioned instructions. The angle is important everywhere, not only for these segments.

I think it’s better to have a good un-KISSed basis then the previous mentioned.

In the coming months i’ve planned to work more intensively on preparing a descent WIKI for the UAE. I hope that will help us get a better base for UAE edits then we currently have.
