Road lock levels

Hi everyone

It’s my first week on Waze. Read as much as I could to avoid asking questions. Yet, some things I still don’t understand.

Obviously I am editor level 1. The road that I was editing, corrected its name, is on lock level 1. In the editor map all my modifications are there, but, it doesn’t reflect on the live map, neither the Waze app.

It’s almost 2 days now. Do I have to wait a little longer, or should I still need my AM’s approval?

Thanks

Hi Gerald,
I think this has been answered before, e.g. here.
Waze will collect our edits and then run map updates which integrate these changes into the live map. These updates are usually run every few days, it will be reported at http://status.waze.com/. This page shows that the live map of the US (+ Canada) currently contains changes up to march 23rd, so its a little behind.
When a road is locked at a higher level than your editor rank, you won’t be able to modify that road in the first place. So you’ll notice that in the editor.
Have you checked the wiki? It will tell you all you need to know about map editing.

Gordonski

PS: Sorry! As you posted this in the SA forum you’re obviously not in the US. The INTL (everything but USA/Canada & Isreal) maps are from April 1st, so your edits will probably show up after the next update…

Thanks for replying
As much as I have read about map editing from various sources, have you finally made it clear. Nowhere is it stipulated that “when a road is locked at a higher level than your editor rank, you won’t be able to modify that road in the first place.” Now I understand that part.

When I save my work, it is automatically saved for the next live map update on the international server?

The email I received said the latest update was for up until April 1 16:00 UTC. Which I presume that UK is the time reference. My editing was after that time.

So my work should be published when the servers update again? I’m just worried that I’m fixing my whole country… To no avail… Hehe.

I just can’t wait to see my first work published

Hi and welcome!

In general, waze often updates the live map daily or nearly daily. Sometimes they have hiccups and there are delays. Usually you can get the latest update status from http://status.waze.com/.

Here’s the latest status:

Take note that although the update occurred April 3, 2014, the update only includes edits up till April 1, 2014 16:00. This is typical behaviour and it means that even when waze is updating every day, edits done in the past day or two will not be included in that particular update.

You should see your first edits go live soon! I can remember the excitement of seeing my first edit actually appear on the map.

Glad to have you on board. There are not very many editors in SA, but we’re quite a friendly bunch

Cheers
Rod

Thanks Rod!

I have been trying almost all free and paid GPS navigators on all platforms, from the leading ones to the really minor ones… I stumbled upon Waze by accident! I had 20 mb on my data bundle that would expire, so I thought I might as well use it on downloading this funny looking navigator. In the first few minutes of browsing the features and settings, read a little, and I was completely interested in it. The fact that I, me me me me me, can contribute by editing the problems in the map, was a heavenly thought. None of the navigators could remotely calculate a route close to the ideal of the purpose of what a navigator is supposed to do, until Waze came along.

I’m really amazed by the way it calculates! Being really impressed, I am willing to contribute. I’m very close to become level 2 editor. It shouldn’t take too long to become level 3  Just want to be an AM really soon

Thanks for the great welcome to both you and gordonski

I clicked the thumbs up icons, to say thanks, and they flipped over. Is that normal?

You’re welcome, Gerald.

I had never noticed the thumb flipping over, so I thanked you by clicking it and you’re right, it does, presumably because clicking it like that will ‘unthank’ you?

Rod

hahaha, well, it obviously would do the opposite

anyway, I’m level 2 now, and almost level 3 now. Will I advance automatically, or should I request advancement. I’m looking forward to being an AM

It’s really hard work to fix the roads which does not follow Waze road standards. Yet, I enjoy doing it. I do my best.

Rod, would you please look at this intersection, and comment. I try to followed the standard, and simplifying the intersection.

Hi Gerald

Actually it is. Additional Details. Admittedly it’s all too easy to glance over this paragraph, and miss that small but important detail.

But unlike many new editors that aren’t aware of this, disconnect segments and get frustrated with the sometimes obscure saving errors trying to reconnect them, give up and just leave those segments disconnected :x, you’ve come to the forum looking for help and will end up spending many hours editing maps, finding towns you never knew existed and planning road trips just so that you can get access to fix the roads in those towns

Apologies for cross-posting, but to answer your other question from last night:

A most definite yes.

Something else you may want to look at to keep you busy is correcting the segment suffixes abbreviations. Drive me dilly when I see “Street”, “Str” and “str” along various segments of the same road. Not to mention the various spellings of crescent. Maybe not high on many editors agenda, but it reduces the noise on small displays.

Thanks Leigh!

dknight (I think) taught me how to remove geo-points on a segment. Haha, now I edit even faster, plus preserving traffic data! I’m sure you like the sound of that

Road trip! Hahaha, funny you say that. Yesterday I had to go to Rosslyn for the work, while having the company car, I made a detour via Brits! just to expand my world to 500 m^2. Last night I did a report in those areas (besides my own)… Now I need to visit Mamelodi to fix those reports I’ve seen…

I try my best. Once I get started, I struggle to end editing. There are just so much to do.

Please remember my M1 (DF Malan Rd) unlock
