Given the updates to the overall style guide for road naming within Waze, I’ve started to put some thought into standardizing the naming convention across Delaware. Officially, all “State Routes” within Delaware are referred to as “Delaware Route XXX” or “DE-XXX”.
As much as I abhor citing Wikipedia, it’s sources check out for this.
U.S. State Naming Conventions (Roadways)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_numbered_routes_in_Delaware <– more important
Therefore, I propose we begin updating ALL state routes within Delaware to read DE-XXX from this point forward.
Thoughts?
So are you proposing to change roads that are currently named as well?
In other words are you proposing to change “Gap Newport Pike” to “DE-41,” “Kirkwood Hwy” to “DE-2,” etc.?
I’m thinking that were a primary name is used, its better to leave it alone.
Does the TTS engine pronounce “DE” as “dee eee,” thus “DE-2” as “dee eee two”?
No, I am proposing to leave currently named roads (primary names) alone for now. As per the concurrent naming rules, we’d have to do some local driving to properly determine what a segment should be named based on signage in the area.
However, I do propose changing exit signage to be DE-XXX as well as alternate names. Officially, from what I’ve read, Delaware refers to their routes as “Delaware Route XXX” or “DE-XXX”. Unofficially, the roads are referred similar to New Jersey, “Route XXX” or even “State Route XXX”.
The TTS pronounces “DE-1” as “dee eee one” unfortunately. Personally, I would be fine with standardizing everything to “State Route XXX” or “SR-XXX” but I do know that (in general) roads are referred to as “DE-XXX”. I have seen local signage (in Rehoboth for example) saying “Delaware Route One” but never “State Route One”.
I haven’t been doing a lot in Delaware, but this sound good to me.
Patience. We don’t yet know how the shield engine will handle state shields. I wouldn’t put a lot of effort into something that won’t be compatible with shield generation.
Understood. I wanted to open this discussion because there are already “special case states” such as Louisiana that are specifically called out in the map editing wiki for proper naming. I figure it is better to start deciding on a standard now so it will be easier in the future.
No one else wants to chime in on this?
Much of what i’m seeing from the Wiki discussions and edits going around regarding this paint a picture that we should standardize the naming scheme for each state (like Louisiana as LA-XXX) and go forward from there.
Based on what I am reading regarding this on the Waze Wiki for State Road Naming, I propose the following:
Long form names:
State Rte 1 N
State Rte 896
etc
Short form (for ramps/exit/wayfinder segments):
DE-1
DE-896
Many construction signs in Delaware will refer to the roads as “State Route 1” but official signage (as well as the website) states “Delaware Route 1” or “DE-1”. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I interpret the Waze wiki in that the long form, road names should be “State Route XXX” to generate a sign badge–and the exit/ramp signs should be the preferred short form–in this case, DE-XXX.
Yes? No? Bueller? Bueller?
Waze still is silent on state naming for shields. I would drop the long form altogether, once Waze feels like telling us they will support it. Until then . . .
The Wiki for naming was updated to include LA-XXX and NC-XXX for Louisiana and North Carolina now–so I can only assume that in some fashion Waze will eventually start to generate signs correctly.
Long form just muddles up the map anyway, so I agree with you on that point…I guess for now, we wait and hope?
Yep.
What do you think will come first, counties or state-specific shields in the app?
See this thread http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=249&t=53977 Want to make a similar on for DE? I will sticky it if you do.
I’d hope state-specific comes first, but at this point I’d say it’s a toss up hah.
As for the standard for route naming in DE, I will definitely write something up and let you know. It would be good to have that as a sticky. I’ve certainly been stealing a lot of Orbitc’s work since he does an awesome job hah!
