Road types and naming

In previous discussion with misomac, we’ve agreed the following assignment of road types. I’m documenting it here as we don’t have a Jamaica wiki (yet).

A - roads - Major Highways
B - roads - Minor Highways

Roads connecting towns/villages shown as yellow on iMap Jamaica (at mag. levels 4 - 6) - Primary Street

Other roads - Streets

I would also suggest that where iMap offers a road name (at mag. levels 8 - 9), that road name be used in WME - e.g. A1 - Linstead By-Pass; B2 - Bog Walk to Natural Bridge Rd; Pear Tree Grove to Riversdale Rd.

Waze Text to Talk recognises quite a few abbreviations, so there is no need for the common road suffixes be spelled out in full on the map:
e.g.

Ave - Avenue
Blvd - Boulevard
Cl - Close
Cr - Crescent
Ct - Court
Dr - Drive
E - East
Gdns - Gardens
Gn - Green
Gr - Grove
Ln - Lane
N - North
Pl - Place
Pk - Park
Rd - Road
S - South
Sq - Square
St - Street
St. - Saint
Ter - Terrace
W - West

Let’s see if this gets some discussion going

Well, that elicited absolutely no response, and there have been no posts by editors working in Jamaica for quite a long time now, but I’ve come across this new resource which makes identifying the road types to use much easier.

The Jamaica National Works Agency now make available on their website 12 parish maps showing the road classification for each road maintained by NWA, together with a list of the surface covering for each of the roads. The link is http://www.nwa.gov.jm/nwa-bridges-and-roads.

Please post any feedback on the usefulness of these resources.

Thanks, Woodvale. I need to drive any route I want to edit correct?

Yes, that’s right. You get editing rights within 1 mile of your route, for 3 months. If you keep driving in that area, that 3 months keeps getting extended.

Have fun!
