Road types

The Wazeopedia has a good starting table for how to classify various roads, based on a legal document that outlines 7 general types of roadway. The highest classifications map to Waze road types very easily:

고속국도 => Freeway (interstate/other) e.g. {400}
일반국도 => Major Highway e.g. (43)
지방도 => Minor Highway e.g. [370]

There is some additional guidance on how to distinguish between street and primary street based on total lane count, but doesn’t take into consideration other factors such as speed limit, is divided (has barriers separating opposite direction of travel), or is access-controlled (with on-/off-ramps).

Some 4-lane roads look like a major/minor highway for these additional reasons, but do not have a number, and according to the document, we should classify them as a Primary Street.

This does not make sense to me. If a road only joins with others via on-/off-ramps, it’s an expressway, and we should at least classify them as minor highways.

What do you think?

Hi Clownse,

Thanks for your issue raising. Here are few reasons why:

  1. Speed limit: There are no direct-relation between the speed limit and the road types as Waze does not take road types as for its directional navigation systems. Which we believed that this is not the issue when considering road types. And second is that as how Korean government has raised the issue of 30-50 speed limits, it doesn’t really apply to everywhere but only for Seoul. There are various speed limits to similar road designs of Motor way highways as well too.

  2. Divided: You are correct, this should be in the document as well. This is directly connected to the navigational issue as it would have you informed to arrive at the destination as it actually requires you to have a u-turn prior to arriving at the actual destination. I have been working on the full size manual of the road construction, and meant to have it done 1st quarter but due to real life work…

  3. Connection roads (ie. on-/off-ramps):
    A. Basically any road connecting IN and OUT towards freeway should be used as Ramp (진출입로).
    B. Any on-/off-ramps for all OTHER roads must be set as 1 level down from where it comes from.
    ie. OFF ramp from 국도(Major Highway) towards 주요 도로 (~로의 주축길, ~대로) should be set as 지방도 (Minor Highway)

  • I would personally recommend that you don’t take 램프 as how it’s actually used with its definitions in Korea as many confuses themselves for 램프 to be a turnable road rather than its original definition as a countable noun. An entrance ramp is a road which cars use to drive onto a major road, and an exit ramp is a road which cars use to drive off a major road. By major road, 고속도로(Highway) would be the perfect example here.

I suggest when you are editing in Korea, please put your settings to Korean language rather than taking English version of the editor so that it would reduce your misunderstandings.
