Roads everywhere!

I’ll just post these here for now.

Farmington has a MESS of random roads, all over the place from the base map import that follow every farmer path, goat path, etc. Are these deletable, or do they need to be cleaned up as private roads, no name dirt roads, etc?

I’ll call this one Turn Left, Turn Right, Screw It:

Yes – Farmington has a lot of original basemap roads in it. The map used to look like this everywhere! Farmington just hasn’t had good attention. Usually people started making sure the long distance (highways) worked well, then got back to the cities. I did some work where URs came up and have spent some time fixing these and adding new subdivisions, but I have not gone in to fix all this.

When you see a road, in your examples dirt road, go where no road exists, first see if it is named. Make note of it. Look around and see if it should have been placed in a nearby location. In such cases, don’t delete it, move it. If you don’t see a match nearby, then delete it. Also draw in the roads that are there.

Sometimes you will see a neighborhood set of roads that are all named correctly, but the location of the roads is mangled in someway, like the birds nest you found. Do your best to re-position named roads. I would delete the rest and start over.

Remember that good dirt roads in this area are considered streets!

If you have not utilized it, try to go to nmroads.com, zoom into Farmington, and see if you can get road names from this database.

A lot of the roads in this area will be Navajo reservation, Indian Reservation Road inventory, or BIA roads. The Navajo DOT has maps of these areas that are fairly good. Road naming conventions for now are at https://www.waze.com/wiki/Indian_Reservation_Roads, but those are in draft. Maybe you can help me refine this. I am trying to work with BIA on this. If I can get an introduction to the Navajo Nation, then I will interact with their GIS people.

Looking a lot better!

Amusingly enough the basemap import turned some “County Roads” into “Creek Roads”

Cool. I have seen spaghetti roads like this before. Thanks for fixing them.

Ditto what Vector said. I got to 6 mostly on cleaning up rural areas (really rural and small town messes just like that) across the west. Though I have dabbled in other states as well. You have the advantage of being local and able to verify road names.
